I downloaded the Firefox browser, and really like it - but what about the Thunderbird replacemnt for Outlook Express? Wanted some opinions before I transferrred all my mail and seetings.

I am now using Outlook (not Express) now - mainly because I can do reminders with alarms for certain e-mails - making sure I come back to them later. I wonder if Thunderbird can do this?.

short answer: yes

long answer: if you're going to use the browser + email + calendar, may i suggest mozilla?

the difference between fox and moz is that mozilla = browser + email + others, while firefox is just the browser.
personally i prefer moz to fox, since i use the browser and email suite.

later on, you can add the calendar extension, or you can install it as stand-alone application.

I've been using FireFox and Thunderbird for a while, I like them quite a bit. Sunbird, the calender program, is still in beta phases though.

Do you know is the calender has a reminder function with alarm? This is one thing I use a lot, and would like to know before I transfer all my stuff.

Thanks

I use Firefox and Thunderbird, not the full Mozilla suite. Thunderbird works great for me! Automatically flags the junk mail fairly accurately, and lets me auto-filter all my email user group messages and such. I don't use any calendar stuff though, only for email.

Imap? Meaning it will flag messages for a later review?

Thanks again

yes i supports reminder function. You can set up a reminder to send you email at whatever event time. As for sounding alarm on the events, i'm not sure since i have never tried it out (i just installed the program last week). But i think you can, based on this faqs.

If you don't feel like transferring all your stuffs just yet, why not try out just the calendar? See if it fits you well, and if you think you'll be satisfied with the program. If you're not, all you need to do is uninstal the program and move on with life ,)

if i remember correctly, IMAP means that you download the email from your server, but do not actually remove the mails from the server (as opposed to POP3 which downloads and deletes the emails from server).

(edit: wrong url for sunbird)

IMAP is more than that, generally you leave the mail on the server but you can do other things to like create folders, server side filtering rules, fast server side searches, etc depending on the server's functionality. POP3 can leave the mail on the server but it only supports one folder and leaving mail on there is usually an invitation to have it deleted automatically by a server cleanup script or download multiple copies because your mail client isn't very smart.

I run my own IMAP server and I wouldn't have it any other way.
