Mozilla firms up Firefox 4 plans

Ugh... If I wanted to use Chrome, I'd use Chrome. At least it's easy to customize Firefox, and I can put things back where they belong.

I dunno, I like the speed and purtyness of chrome, but the security in FF. Could be the right direction to take.

I hate the way Chrome looks :^D I don't like tabs on top of the windows either. Now that I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook, I have no reason whatsoever to use Chrome. Firefox doesn't lag out my SSD anymore. Speed isn't my biggest concern. Firefox is fast enough, and faster in many cases. It's not a huge deal in any case. The other nice thing about Firefox, is you can make it what you want. I'm sure a retro theme will be out within a week of FF4's release, or I may even be able to get it close enough with built in customization. Firefox gives you options. That's hard to beat :^)

you can already make FF3 as it is now to look like the early mock-ups of FF4, including the proposed "firefox" button that should condense and replace the menu bar in terms of functionality...that's the great thing about open source, so many people outside of mozilla are contributing to make the browser better than the competition

As long as I can make FF4 look like FF3, which in my opinion is a nice layout, then fine. I do not want to be stuck with a UI that can't be tweaked to a user's preferences. And we will need to wait out all the add on writers to make stuff work with FF4

Another great thing about FF and it being open sourced is that they willing provide early builds not only to iron out their own work, but to allow 3rd parties to get their add-ons working prior to final releases.

i'm sure that we will be able to change the look to be more like version 3.6 if we want to.

Yea, I'm not concerned; it just irritates me that they're copying Google. That's the nice thing about Firefox. You can make it any browser you like :^)

I wonder if 4 will actually complete the projects goal of using 100% of free RAM available on the user's system

lol

honestly I like Firefox, I have used IE, Opera, chrome, whatever...
if you want something really light weight, try K-Meleon.

I find that ever since I built a really basic E5200/4GB system on Win7, Firefox has not caused me any lag issues. When I was still using an old Athlon 1800/512mb, using Firefox got irritating sometimes.

I can see that Chrome is pretty quick, and is designed to look sleek. IMO it's not worth giving up what I have with Firefox to switch to anything else. All the plugins are great.

Edit: Right now, Firefox is taking up about 150MB. This isn't an issue because I have plenty of available ram to do everything else I need to do, but on underpowered systems, this can be a pain in the ass.

Even then 150MB is nothing when it comes to modern browsers. I try most of the major browsers on a consisent basis. They are all capable of using over 200MB during heavy usage.

Worse culprit when it comes to memory browser usage seems to be flash though

I find that FireFox just lags my whole system even if it's just using 150MB of RAM. No idea why. I have 4 Gigs of it, so it shouldn't matter that much
