Note: this version is problematic, in that the search bar content is affected. I tried getting the search bar to work, but did not succeed. Re-installed previous version 33.1.1.

Firefox 34 introduced a new default search engine (Yahoo, in the US) and a new searchbar feature that allows one-off searches with different search engines to be more easily made.

To change the default search engine - Click the searchbar magnifying glass and select 'Change Search Settings', then make your changes in the window that opens.

To revert the searchbar to pre-Firefox 34 functionality -

#1. Enter about:config in the addressbar (urlbar).

#2. Note 'warning notice' and proceed.

#3. Enter for browser.search.showOneOffButtons in the top left searchbox. Right click this entry, select 'Toggle' and toggle to false.

#4. Restart the browser for the change to take effect.

#5. Change the default search engine, if desired, in the usual way.

I just updated from 33.1.1 to this and the search bar is just fine, what do you mean exactly that it's not working?

No issues here either. When you feel like trying it again, I would recommend that you first have Firefox check to see if your plugins are up to date/compatible. If nothing is found there, see if you can replicate the problem running Firefox in safe mode.

Edit: I am using the auto update and it only takes me to 34.0, so I wonder if the 34.0.5 has already been pulled.

I downloaded 34.05 via Mozilla website,no issues so far.

My Firefox browser did update to version 34 but not 34.05 so that's why I went to their website for latest version.

What did they change between v. 34 and 34.0.5? When I updated from the browser itself it only went to 34.

Automatically uploaded to 34.0. Loads, says pages loading, but no site shown. Same problem on all sites. Loads but gives blank page. Installed 34.0.5 from website, same problem. Have gone back to 33.1, everything back to normal. Running Win7 Pro 64bit.

I have long disabled automatic updates for Firefox because of crap like this.

The new search bar works if you don't:
- want to open search results in a new tab with a non-default search engine
- want to rearrange the order of your search engines
- want to use many search engines
- want to drag and drop words into the searchbar to search with a non-default search engine
- want to easily change the default search engine
- want to know, at a glance, what the default search engine is

and generally
- want to do anything useful at all with the search bar other than search Google like a retard and not understand what the search bar is for in the first place (this is aimed at Mozilla devs, not you guys).

Once again, Mozilla shoots themselves in the foot, and I can only expect that their market share will continue to fall like a wingless freaking stone. Advanced users made Firefox. Advanced users that asked for something more than a basic browser turned Firefox into what it was in 2010. And it was advanced users that allowed Firefox to reach a quarter of the marketshare.

To my knowledge, there are plenty of advanced users that have long switched to the handicapped and limited Chrome, simply because they can't be bothered (like I can) to spend their time tweaking and hacking Firefox to make it work like they want it to work...

What a travesty.

Probably why EU versions stayed on 34.0 unless you do a manual download of 34.0.5.

They've also defaulted to Baidu in China and Yandex in Russia. Changing up their revenue to be from 4 companies as opposed to 1, their main competitor, seems like a smart idea.

This was interesting. When I updated the desktop, it did indeed change the default search engine to Yahoo. When I updated on my laptop (on the host machine and one of my VMs), it stayed on Google. Maybe it thinks the laptop is on another continent.

Finally got round to checking extensions. You were right, thanks. Yoono 7.7.34 was the culprit. Removed it and all is well again.

Just tested it and it is fine for me, looks like the normal speed it loads. Maybe check your addons or profile if it is only happening in firefox?
