Moving XP over to new build?

currently have XP pro running on an AREA-51. Am building my own monster gaming rig.

XP is currently running on a single 36GB Raptor. Maybe this is a dopey question, so I am ready for the rotten tomatoes.

Can I pick up my current Raptor, install it in SATA 1 on my new ASUS motherboard, and presto, changeo, the new PC just comes up running XP like nothing ever happened?

I think the answer is no, since I think I remember that XP licensing is now tied to specific hardware(the MOBO maybe?)

If I don't have to give Bill more money for another copy of his *()&% operating system, I don't want to!!

thanks..

Your OEM license is tied to your hardware and is therefore not (legally) transferrable to your new system.

If I don't have to give Bill more money for another copy of his *()&% operating system, I don't want to!!

Your options are:

1. Don't use Windows, or
2. Purchase a retail copy of Windows so that you can transfer it to a new machine later on.

thanks, that's what I thought.

i did notice that XP home edition was removed from my newegg cart last night as "no longer available", and it no longer shows up on their site.....guess they are getting rid of it in favor of XP ME instead?

I'll order a fresh copy with my new rig hardware.

thanks!

what if he does not need Arena 51 anymore he can move his OS to his new computer and he has to call MS?

www.microsoft.com/howtotell kinda says it all OEM OS is MARRIED to the motherboard of the machine that it's installed on PERIOD. I am a MS small systems builder, and that's the word from BOB (MS forums name)HOWEVER, and LISTEN closely boys and girls, if your motherboard goes DEFECTIVE AND YOU are the systems builder, you can replace the DEFECTIVE motherboard ,and then u need to call MS, and do the phone thingy a PITA, but still worth it. One thing to look at is,if you DO buy OEM software ,you can sell your machine later on, provided you give the software and all doccuments that came with it to the new owner. with the os still installed, therefor increasing its sale value.
