moving XP OEM from Laptop to Desktop

Originally posted by: Bigystyle
I have an older computer sitting around Id like to put XP on. I have liscence for XP that was activated at one time (OEM copy) on a laptop, but is not being used. Id like to put it on the desktop to save the $$ of course. Anybody ever do this? what questions would they ask?

Edit: I understand the EULA's....Im just simply wondering if anybody ever attempted a change this radical
I think a response may get me banned, as your asking the question may get you banned too.

So you do understand your asking for help stealing, right? And you do understand that such questions will get a lock a minimum, a ban if you push it, right?

the thing is, why is it that I can buy a piece of hardware and I can use it on any computer I want, but If I buy software (which you really aren't buying according to them, even though you have a tangible object) i can install it once and that's it. That is such a BS stance on the software companies part. You have to spend more on our operating system than any part in your computer cost. The Gov shouldn't go after M$ over anti-trust, they should go after them for slimey tactics like that.

For clarification, you have no idea that you are not able to do what you please with it until you actually buy it and open it, then you are stuck with it because the places that sell it wont take it back because it's open.

When you buy an OEM licence, you pay less, and agree to only install it on one computer. If you want the ability to transfer the software to another computer, you pay more and buy the retail licence.

Basically you pay less and agree to their terms.

at the risk of turning this thread into a big mess...

He's asking for facts about violating a copyright license ... while possibly illegal ... is NOT the same thing as stealing. Physical property theft is very simple ... copyright law is not.

As a developer I certainly don't condone either one. But I think it's a bit too simplistic to equate one with the other.

The fact is though, for it's own protection, this board doesn't take kindly to discussions on either violating EULAs or theft.

Edit: I understand the EULA's....
Really? I think many of us understand watered down articles ABOUT the EULAs... but actually understanding the EULA directly?

It's sad but true.
