Hi folks,

I have searched and found info. about moving XP to a new HD, but that's not what I am doing.

I will be perfoming a new build, going to an Intel Quad Core so a new MOBO is in order.

i want to take my 150GB Raptor that is running XP, and just move it over from my current build and attach to the new build with a new MOBO.

I can't find out if the XP hardwarwe registration is tied to the HD or the MOBO..

Is there anything I have to do when moving an XP HD over with a new build, or will it just boot up as normal with the new MOBO?

thanks...

First, you need to know if you have an OEM version of XP or not.
If you do it may or may not activate on the new motherboard or
in some cases, legally, if it is OEM and the mobo is changed
then you can't reuse the OEM OS (unless you tell MS the mobo
failed and the original model can't be had anymore)

Second, to move over to the new drive you can either make a Ghost
Image and then Restore it to the New Drive (Acronis Tru Image can also do this)
or most Hard Drive Makers, at their website, you can download software to clone
your old hard drive to the new one.

Third, depending on the new hardware on the mobo, XP may or not boot OK
You may need to do a Repair Install to fix the Drivers XP installs.
Or it may be better in some cases, to do a full Clean Install of XP and your apps

And of course, if you go that route, you will need all your License Codes and
Product IDS to install all the software ... Everest Home Edition or Belarc Advisor
can supply them for you. They can be had at www.majorgeeks.com and other
sites.

Your license is tied to the motherboard, so that won't fly from a legit-license standpoint. Suggestion: get a new Windows license and sell your old one with the motherboard/CPU that it's married to. If you stuck the COA to the chassis like the license agreement requires, then you're going to need to send that too, for the transfer of license to be legit.

thanks Mech!

that's a great idea regarding selling my existing XP with the MOBO.

I do want to be on the up and up, even if it is Bill Gates and his trashy operating system!
