Moving Windows XP Questions

I would like to move my activated copy of Windows XP Home from my Dell, which isn't my main comp anymore to a custom built rig which is right now. My question is what problems could I be facing as I move the product from one computer to another. I have a copy of 2000 to put on it, or ME which shipped with it.

A very interesting problem. Before M$ activation it would not have been a problem, now you must jump through hoops. At the very least you will probably have to make a phone call to M$. I will be interested to know if you are successful and what steps were required.

If it's been more than 6 months since your original activation, I am pretty sure you will be able to install XP onthe new machine and activate it normally over the internet.

It's just so ironic that people with pirated copies of XP never have to worry about such things. Theirs will work anywhere under any circumstances. It's the people that bought a legitimate copy that are treated like criminals.

The activation guy asked me "So how many machines do you have this installed on?" lol!

And you said.......?

Thanks for activating my copy jerk, get used to me because I am going to be reinstalling my copy of XP every single day for the rest of my life.

Seriously though my year old copy has been installed too many times...I alway have to call it in whenever I reinstall it...which has been around 20 times.

They always ask me "Do you mind if I ask why you are resintalling it?"

I always tell them but next time I am going to say , yes I mind, its none of your business!

What a pain in the butt.

They always make me feel guilty every time I call.....but I swear I am the original owner of the software and it is only installed on one PC.
I guess the guilt stems from the fact that it was originally installed on a built PC and pretty much everything on it has been replaced once or
twice because I am the type that just cannot stop fiddling with my stuff.

Oh well, I am selling this PC along with this software shortly then I will only use my user friendly copies. 🙂

There's also the little fact that XP doesn't need reinstalled every 2 weeks like Win9X does, if you're having a specific problem over and over maybe you should work on a more permanent solution?

Well, that's true too. And is one of the things that makes me like XP so much.
The stability plus Restore/Repair features do make reinstalls largely a thing of the past for me.

The activation resets itself every ~six months so you can install and activate it again. And yes, I have personally tested this and it does work.

I had to ring up once when I upgraded my motherboard and the free five minute call was no big deal at all.
