Moving to Tucson AZ from Chicagoland... Update: Arrived...

Got an internship(co-op) for 3 months... if I do well it may be extended for extra 3 months or even turn into a full time position... so pretty much I'm starting out a new life across the country...

I hear the weather is always hot, but at least its dry heat... and that people are mostly geniunely nice(Southern Hospitality?)...

I haven't found a place yet, but pretty much I'll just have my car and my computer and cloths...

26, single asian male... I think it'd be hard to find single mid-20s asian women in Tucson... =p

Leaving all my family, church, and friends... When'll home-sickness kick in?

UPDATE: scroll down...

Home-sickness will kick in the second you leave your home. It did for me at least.

I've never even been to Tuscon, but I've heard it's a fairly nice place. Southern hospitality refers mainly to 'the south" which consists mostly of your lower southeastern states, but I'm sure they're nice enough.

Tucson's weather rules except for the summer if you don't like heat.
Beats IL hands down in that regard.

I vist often to see family and I like it down there.

I live in Tucson, frankly it depends on the part of town you live/work in.
If you are around the U of A campus great, your set, if you are anywhere else your screwed. I live/work on the FAR east side and if i go out i cant drink that much because a cab rde back costs too much and DUI task force are abundant here.
There are actually a LOT of mid 20's asian women going to the U of A but i have no clue about singularity and mostly see them around campus only.
Other than that its mostly hot, the "southern hospitality" i dunno wtf you are talking about, there are no southerners here, mostly mexicans, which can be very nice actually just learn their language a bit or they can screw with ya. I know there are a lot of people here that moved from chicago (my boss and one of my co-workers is from chicago) and they enjoy it here in the winter but in the summer, you will immediately grow home sick. Its already 95 verging on 100+ here 😛

Tucson is a neat town. Better weather and not as chaotic as Phoenix. The "big" city is just an hour and a half north in Phoenix, Mexico (Nogales) is an hour and a half south. There's snow capped mountains 4 hours north in Flagstaff.

Lots of outdoorsy stuff to do...camping, mountain biking, hiking, golfing, ect.

Just be mindful of your surroundings, the crime down there is fairly high. Living in Chicago it shouldn't be a huge culture shock though.

Enjoy the weather and the fine UofA ladies 🙂

Weird, I am leaving VA for Illinois(Machesney Park) for a 10 week internship at fatwallet. I am sure I will:
-be homesick (but it'd probably go aways quickly since I'll be working my ass off and it's only 10 weeks)
-not drive there (There are four more interns, so I'll ride with one of them)
-Have fun 😀

Regards

ng

Oh yea! I forgot, any tips in what to do (aside from working) while I am in Illinois?

crime... didn't think much of that... how are the crime rates compared to chicago??

I think i'll be living near the UofA campus and commuting to where I work(shouldn't be too far)... maybe take a night class hehe

I do like outdoorsy stuff like camping and mountain biking, but if its too hot its not as fun... any fishing? probably not...

crime rates are prettymuch the same i think...that website above puts it best....less violent crimes but things like vehicle thefts and crap like that are abundant.
If you leave ANYTHING out someone will come by and steal it. Reguardless of where you live or what it is seems like. Its not too uncommon to see a guy stop his truck and pick through peoples trash esp if there is something like a couch/vacuum/etc sitting beside it. I've had my truck keyed, my wallet stolen, my CC # stolen, and a slew of run ins with crazy dudes downtown that want to fight. But thats liek anywhere i think though

there is fishing btw...tucson is surrounded by moutnains and there are lakes and streams all around. There is a lake just a few miles up the catalina highway (goes out of tucson, maybe a 30 min drive) to mount lemon that is stocked with small trout i believe.

I live in Tucson as well (born here). The summer will be HOT but the monsoons can be spectacular, the desert smells awesome when it rains, lots of lightning too. If you want to do anything outdoors in the summer you pretty much have to get up at / before sunrise when its extrememly nice. It warms up to the 90s and higher by about 10-11 am. If you live by the university you can probably bike to work and the surrounding areas. If you don't know where you are going to live yet, rentals downtown can be expensive (although maybe not compared to what you are used to). Be sure to check out the Sonoran Desert Museum, sometimes they have a night walk where you can better see nocturnal creatures. Kartchner Caverns, Mt Lemmon (the Santa Catalina Mountains, and Sahuaro Park East are very scenic as well). Shoot me a PM if you ever have any questions.

Another Tucsonian checking in here. Well I actually moved to Sierra Vista a couple of years ago. If you're looking for a place and are worried about the crime, stick to the East side of town. STAY OUT OF SOUTH TUCSON! The basic rule of thumb is the farther North and farther East you go the better. Exceptions would be some of the outying sub-divisions like Rita Ranch or Vail. The city seems to be growing very fast and traffic at 5 is a big PITA so maybe consider that when picking a location to live relative to where you work. Driving in grid-lock when it's a 110 outside is no fun even if you do have a good A/C. Also, don't be fooled by the 'but it's a dry heat' line. Well, so is you oven but you don't go sticking your head in there do you? 110 degrees is 110 degrees... it's hot.. period.

But, Tucson is a good place to live none the less. There are more good resturaunts than you can eat at in a year. Weather is mild during winter and most of the year it's sunny. Tucson is big but still has somewhat of a small-town feel. People are generally OK, you're going to find assholes anywhere you go and there's plenty of night life to keep you entertained. Be sure to check out 4th and Congress.

JR..

wow, thanks for the advice people... the locations are pretty interesting, i'll def look them up henrythewound.. i'm pretty much looking at living around the UofA campus, but my work would be a little further southeast near the I10 (IBM centers)... is there lots of traffic going southeast during the morning and northwest during the night?

Well being Asian and having moved to Arizona in the past year (from california), I guess we have something in common. I'm living in Tempe because I attend ASU, but I've been to Tucson 6-7 times to party with some friends. I think from the outside it looks like a sh!thole, that's pretty much the first impression most people get when they first arrive there, but like everyone else said, it depends where you are. The weather is nicer than the Phoenix area however, and overall I think Arizona is just an incredible state to live in. It's really easy for ASU kids to badmouth Tucson, and I do my fair share, but on the whole it's not like your about to live in Compton.

Crime rates in Arizona in general are fairly high but consist of mostly auto thefts and whatnot, violent crimes don't seem to be any higher than anywhere else.

One question; how "asian" are you? Where did you grow up, etc. The lack of asians in the state can be a slight problem for some people. I didn't mind even though I moved from the Bay Area though.

3 weeks left... planning to leave around memorial day or possibly on the 28th

Anything essential items to pack that I might forget when starting a new life besides my computer and clothes?

2 days left...
I heard that I might be getting a Full time position with them immediatly upon the completion of my 3 month term as a Co-op. Sweet!

my car is packed to its brim... will have to leave a few things behind like my water cooler and down comforter(i don't need it in AZ...)

said goodbye to most of my friends and church already...

its getting to that great big event where I must finally truly leave the nest and fly off...

no more classes, no more teachers, papers, programs and exams... hello world of if-i-screw-up-i-get-fired and a world where i'll actually have $$$$$$$$$$$$$

i did find a place down there... living with a female roommate... gonna be a first for me. no, no pics and she's already taken. yay craigslist.
