Tacoma is a very nice town. I live in Puyallup, which is around a 20 minute drive away. Tacoma is the up and coming city, its growing like crazy. They have an awesome artistic scene with the glass museum, the new art museum, natural history museum, chihuly glass blowing, etc.

Its still fairly industrial though, and is almost antique in some parts, as well as some parts being rough, such as the infamous hilltop, where gangs used to roam rampant, although it is much better now.

Tacoma is fairly diverse too, lots of racial diversity, unlike puyallup which is 99.9% white...

Lots of stuff to do, a big mall, airport fairly close, seattle 45 minutes away, lots of suburbs, kick ass gambling(if you are into that), etc etc etc ;)

Weather is pretty good. We hit around 80 today, which is pretty nuckin futs, usually we have a fairly mild climate, not really any snow in the winters, although it sometimes gets downright cold, and the summers are generally mild as well, but they have also been getting hotter.

Places to check out...Downtown tacoma has a kickass scene, some clubs and stuff, but most are in seattle. Good restaurants: Harmons, The Vault, and tons more i cant think of. Very close to the water, ruston way is pretty frickin sweet, lots of activity down there usually.

want to know anything else lemme know.

Are you kidding? Tacoma is a *Disgusting DUMP* of a town. The only place I've ever been that I'd consider WORSE is New Jersey. I lived in Tacoma for 3 years while I went to school for networking, and I hated it. Rainy all the time, the pulp mill makes the entire city smell like a sh1tfarm about half the week, it's FILLED with gang punks, sleazeballs and drug addicts.

I'd take Seattle over Tacoma ANY day. Hell, I'd even take PORTLAND over Tacoma. Even Los Angeles isn't as nasty as Tacoma is, and Los Angeles is pretty nasty in some places.

Jason

when was the last time you were in tacoma? comparing tacoma to LA? get a grip man, tacoma is nothing compared to LA. well, not anymore. gratned it used to be, but it has changed. LA is still horrible.

WTF? Prostitutes in University Place? Mind telling me exactly where, you might be thinking of Lakewood with it's closer proximity to the military bases.

I've lived here in Tacoma since 1993, when my dad retired from the Navy. University Place specifically since 1995.

Tacoma itself: It's a blue-collar city. It always has and will depend on normal, average-joe workers. They've begun to revitalize the downtown area, which is where UW-Tacoma is at. University Place is more Western Tacoma, about 20 minutes to downtown, depending on how you get there.

First: Traffic. The closest highway to University Place is Highway 16. But, it's easy to get to I-5 either through 56th Street or 74th Street. Hell, you could even take 19th Street or even 6th down to I-705 and get on I-5 from there. There's no need to hit Highway 16 only if you want to get to Gig Harbor etc.

Here's info on University Place's crime rates.

If you need more information, just PM me.

I am not a big fan of Tacoma, but maybe thats because I have always been in Seattle or Spokane. I moved over to Seattle 5 years ago and the few times I have had to travel in Tacoma I had less then a great experience. Maybe they have gotten better, I'm not sure, but I still have a funny feeling about that city.

That being said, I will tell you what some others have all-ready said, WA state is a great place. First off we have an annoying sales tax (8.8% in Seattle) but that is more than compensated by no state income tax, WOHOO!!!!. Also we have the only rain forest in the country, and that is just a hop skip and a jump away in the Olympic Mountains. speaking of mountains, we have 4 mountain ranges, but only two really count, the Olympics and the Cascades. Besides the rainforest and mountains we have desert, pine forests, coast land, and even wetlands, quite a diverse climate if I do say so myself.

Vanoucer and Whistler is a short(er) drive away (3 hours), there is tons of hiking, biking, water sports, even rally races to attend. The coast is awesome (though the water is freaking cold) and we have LEGAL FIREWORKS!!! (at least in some place ;) )

If you want any other info let me know, I have been a WA state resident for 18 of my 23 years on this planet so I have a decent idea what there is to do, though most of that was on the other side of the state.

Tacoma? My condolences. Come and live in Bellevue or Mercer Island if u get the chance. Much closer to Seattle and better overall.

bellevue is worse off than tacoma if you go into where the people actually live. the island isn't half bad though.

Why exactly are you moving to tacoma? i missed that

http://bellevuewa.areaconnect.com/crime1.htm
http://tacoma.areaconnect.com/crime1.htm

Also Bellevue has some of the best public highschools in the nation (Newport, Bellevue), which is why I'm glad I lived here and not in Tacoma. But then again if you like to live in a larger city tacoma might be for you, although at that point you might as well move to seattle.

I prefer my new city, Issaquah, to Bellevue though that is a very nice place to shop and live (my step dad is in bellevue and the step mom is on mercer island.)

Easy enough, Oregon is a disgusting dump full of drug addicts, hippies and whackos who have NO RESPECT for private property rights whatsoever.

Frankly they should leave Portland as the sole "state" and fence off the rest to be used as a giant campground.

I hate Oregon and I would *never* move there again. EVER.

that and the large drug bust several years ago where all the cops decided that the only way to make sure that none of the stuff got into the wrong hands was to burn it by the docks, was a good idea till the wind shifted into town. w00t for contact high!

I was last in Tacoma in 2001. At that time, at least, it was STILL a dump. LA's got some bad areas, yes, but it's no worse than Tacoma was last time I was there. It does, however, have the benefit of actually having some SUNLIGHT most of the year.

Sorry, constant rain sucks.

*looks out window* no rain, sun trying to peek through the clouds. yes, i'll admit, we have alot of cloud coverage throughout most of the year. but the rain isn't as bad as everyone says it is. its not hard torrential rain, just some light rain that happens every 5 to 10 minutes or so. then about a 15 minute break, the it starts all over again. its refreshing really. but yes, there are times when it seems like it doens't stop raining. those are times when you throw parties and the like.

I know it. *Disgusting* place. I dated a girl from Tacoma when I lived there (BIG mistake, fvcking skank) whose mother used to say "how could you live near LA before? The air smells down there!" I was like wait a minute, you live in *Tacoma* and you have the gall to call *anyplace* stink? Christ almighty, a friggin' SULPHUR mine smells better than Tacoma used to. Sometimes I was tempted to smear my own crap all over my upper lip just to mask the nasty smell of that place :)

I need to find the stats but supposedly Seattle has the least annual rainfall of any of the major coastal cities, we just have more rainy days. Most of the time it's just drizzle which is nice to hike or bike in, at least I think so.
