Moving to RAID from single drive

It might be asked a thousand times but just did a search on RAID on GH forum and didn't find exactly what I am looking for. So, here comes the question.

I am currently using a single Quantum AS drive with Window 2000 installed. I will be getting another identical drive and a Promise FastTrak controller.

Q1: If I am going to have a RAID 0 or 0+1 setup on these drives, is it a MUST to reinstall Windows?

Q2: How do I create partitions for drives in RAID 0 or 0+1? Eg. In RAID 0, I have 80 GB of capacity. Can I make 4 20 GB partitions?

Bump, because I was going to do the same. I'm going to guess that you will need to reinstall, but I'm only guessing. I do know that you can make the 4 partitions, but why would you want to?

That's what I think too. I just want to gather some opinion and see if I can avoid it.

I am just making an example. I usually have the OS on one smaller partition and miscellaneous stuff on another.

When you create a new RAID array, you must reinstall everything. The easiest way would be to use some software like Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image and burn the image onto CD then just load the image back onto your system once you've created the array. Remember, in a RAID 0 your computer sees both drives as one big drive, so partitioning isn't a problem. Also, don't forget that if you do want to do a RAID 0+1, you'll need a minimum of 4 drives.

Edit:
I just realized that some drive image programs won't work with a RAID 0. If you can't find one that does, then you'll have to do a format and clean install the long way.

Unless you are using raid for mirroring I just don't think it's worth it.
