Moving to Pennsylvania

So apparently I fooled some employer into thinking I am like smart or something and they are paying me to move from my home of ~25 years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas up to State College, Pennsylvania.

I am leaving Wed. afternoon to begin my drive and start work on Monday, July 11. So after I get settled into my new abode, is there any "must do" type thing in central Pennsylvania?

For one of my first trips I plan on visiting Gettysburg since it is relatively close and I want to tool around in Philly after I get settled in. But, besides that what else is there - if anything - should I be sure to check out?

Go to a lot of parties at Penn State.

Relocate to Philly, the best city ever.

Run around Philly screaming "Adriane" at the top of your lungs. I'm sure it has never been done before.

One time I was running in a hoodie at night, while it was raining...I passed these big black guys and they started singing the Rocky theme song. It was relatively amusing.

I plan on looking for a new job after I move up there. They flew me up to State College for a few days, and let's say that I am just too much of a city boy. I mean, WTF, they don't even have a Banana Republic, Costco, or a Super Target.

That's just not right.

I've heard Philly is a pretty awesome city, but my only experience in that town has just been the airpot.

And could they make the streets in center city more than 4 feet wide? We don't drive horses anymore!

Broad and Market are both very wide. Chestnut and Walnut are narrow...its all part of the Philly charm baby!

LOL! You're screwed. You're in the college town, the only place in the entire state with anything going on. Be prepared for some of the WORST roads and traffic ever... With some of the worst drivers ever on them. Buy a car that can do 0-60 in less than 7secs, because that's the maximum amount of merge lane you'll get anywhere in the state and 90% of the ramps are ridiculously sharp corners that require you to damn near go 0-60. If you have any construction zones in your commute, be prepared for them to be there until the day you die. Most of PA's present construction projects were started in the depression as public works projects.

Not only the main streets, I know I was on Sansom Street today, and a truck was stopped making a delievery and I couldn't get by. It was bedlam. The side streets are insanely narrow. Not very charming when there are a thousand sweaty drivers honking away.

....well there's your problem, who drive down Sansom? Everyone knows to avoid center-city driving at all costs, but if you must, stick to JFK!

I would add that PA drivers think a short on ramp means stop on the ramp & wait for a gap in traffic. Try that anywhere else in the US & you'll get a car up your ass but in PA it's normal.

Drives me up the friggin' wall.

I've dealt with some pretty shoddy driving and traffic nightmares, I'm not too concerned with that.

Honestly, I am not too thrilled about moving but my last permanent "real" job went out of business last October and I have been kind of in limbo since. I do analytical chemistry and the industry is pretty messed up and I was becoming desperate for a good job and it came down to a I-gotta-do-what-I-gotta-do thing.

I've seen merge lanes with stop signs on them... The DOT agrees with the drivers. I've also seen a blind left-hand entrance with NO merge lane in a construction zone with a stop sign. Technically, I should go through that on my commute to school every day. Haha no. I'd be dead within a week.
