Moving to NYC in June

I just signed a job offer with a consulting firm in mid-town. I am graduating in May, and looking to move up in June. I am moving from the Lehigh Valley, in PA, so its not a far trip. I have been looking on craigslist for places to live, just trying to get an idea of whats going on.

I have been primarily looking at places like Hoboken, Weehawken, Jersey City, and Elizabeth. It looks like for a 2-bedroom its around 1300-1600/ month in most places I have been looking. I'll only be making $52k/year ~ $4000/month, so that might even be pushing it. Ill prob set my sights on a 1-bedroom. My girlfriend, soon to be fiance, will be moving up with me, but shes got a year of grad school left, so shes not much help, besides what she will make waitressing (possibly around $800 -1200/month), after she graduates prob making about $40-50k.

So does anyone have suggestions as to what town or area to live in? I pretty much tossed out the idea of living in Manhattan since it is so expensive.

Also when do most people actually sign leases? I signed mine at school 6 months ahead of time, but it seems like you wait till closer to the move in date in the real world.

Thanks

Damn leaving the wonderfull Lehigh valley!!! 🙁 There are sooo few of us left. I'd say your best bet is to live outside the city like you are thinking. It's still expensive but cheeper than the city itself.

Congrats on the job though! 😎

Don't live in jersey, live in queens. You want to take the train, not the bridge, trust me.

Well wouldnt I be taking the train from Jersey, isnt it called the PATH?

yes its called the PATH, and if i remember correctly its a $1.25 /trip

Youre still making the wrong decision. The path is at least 5 bucks a way if I remember correctly. Youre also going to have to take the subway afterwards.

22 rides a month at 10 bucks a day is 220. Then add another 4 bucks a day for like another 60 a month. Plus it is going to take quite a bit longer to get home. And youre still going to have to take your car to the path station.

Live in queens, and walk to the subway. Commuting from jersey is for executives and families. Couples = queens.

Why should I look at Queens or Brooklyn as opposed to NJ? Need all the info I can get...

you couldn't be more off with the price of the PATH

In terms of rent the cost should be fairly the same. There are some nice neighborhoods in Queens, like Forest Hills, Bayside, etc. (I'm not gonna comment about NJ, since I don't know too much)

Ya, I am indeed corrected. But I still wouldnt want to live in hoboken. There are some very nice places in queens. There are also sh*tty places in queens.

If you want to live in a nice neighborhood with young people, try forest hills. There are a few other nice places, but most of them aren't connected directly to the subway, which is what you want if you want your life to be easy.

Nope not really, the Big 4 were coming in at 55k, had offers from Ernst and Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The one I took offers overtime, so it will prob work out to a little more. I was surprised it was that low too. I was expecting at least 60k...

Look at it this way: If you are absolutely married to life in the suburbs and cant think of life without driving everywhere you could possibly need to go, having absolute quiet at night, and not being sandwiched between someone living above, below, and to both sides of you, and are willing to waste a considerable amount of time each day commuting to keep it that way, then jersey is for you.

If you want a change of pace, to move to the actual city, not spend your entire day and night commuting, learn why many of us in the city dont even have a car, and live amongst the city instead of looking at it from outside, then try queens.

Both are going to be nice, relatively safe, and about the same price.

The commute from jersey taking the path takes just as long (if not faster) than the commute from queens or any of the other boroughs

manhattan is expensive, but you could make it work between the two of you. she would pull in more than that as a waitress depending on where she works. living in queens would probably be a better choice if you want to save the most. the commute to midtown wouldn't be too bad for you from day to day. but as a waitress in the city for her might become a nightmare during the late night shifts. jersey isn't so bad if you're near a path station. but staying in hoboken could be just as costly as living in nyc.

it all depends on where you're going. obviously, if you final destination if WTC then taking the path from jersey would be the quickest. you do have a point. jersey does have it's advantages.

Assuming you live 2 minutes away from the path station and your job is a 2 minute walk from the path station.

Subway ride from queens = 30 mins, 45 max with waiting included, add 5-10 minutes depending how far you live from the station.

From hoboken, assuming a few things = 10 min ride to path station, 10 or more minute wait for path train, 10 or more minute commute into the city (never took it before, just assuming), 5-10 minute walk from path train to subway, 5-10 minute wait for subway, 10-15 min subway ride. And thats assuming that you can take one subway line directly from your path station to your work. Every time you switch lines you have to add in at least another 10 minutes.

You'd think it's low, but that's what it is even for bigger companies. That's why a lot of people had issue with MTA workers (high school educated or less people making about $52k) asking for more money.

pretty accurate. basically if you're going to live in queens, try not to find a place in fresh meadows or bayside where the trains don't run to

You're also forgetting to factor in the subway time from queens. you can have another 15+ minutes after that ride from queens. (i.e. transfer from 7 train in grand central to 4 or 5 going downtown to Wall Street... thats at least 15-20 minutes). And your point with being close to a PATH station, thats true, however the same holds for living in Queens. (I personally live about 20 minutes away, by bus, from a subway station.)
