If you're scared of Manhattan, you might as well consider moving to Hoboken, Williamsburg or Astoria.

i take offense that i've been lumped in with hoboken (i live in astoria) 😀
I live in Hoboken and I resent being lumped in with a bunch of Greeks and Mets fans...

If you like living in a place with no restaurants or bars or fun, go for it...

Yeah but you're within a short subway ride to midtown, right?
True, but one of the great joys of living in NYC is that you can walk out of your door at anytime of day or night and get a slice of pizza, grab a beer, solicit a hooker, go dancing. Living on Roosevelt Island doesn't have that.

Roosevelt Island is so sad. Their main attraction is probably "Main Street." It's got a generic bar, a deli, a stationary store and a supermarket. Maybe 2 Chinese takeouts. Um..and yea a tennis court. I guess it's got everything one needs to live with but DAMN it's so fvckin boring!!!!!!!!
