Moving to NY next month

I'm moving from Berkeley to NY in April for work. I'll have housing provided for me for a couple months. My office will be midtown. What are the best places to live? NY seems really expensive. What can I expect in terms of how much to pay for a one bedroom in Manhattan? Preferably with a doorman, and close enough to transportation and nightlife.

What are the best places to go out for someone in their mid-twenties? What's the weather like in April over there?

Expect to pay $1500/mo. for a studio apartment. Or $2k/mo. That's my mortgage for a house 45 minutes east of NYC on LI. You know what a studio apt is right ? Your bedroom is about it.

Try Brooklyn apts or even Queens. Subway commute will be bearable - within 1 hr or so. Your social life would take a hit though... prob still better than your wallet.

Weather in April is usually warmer... 55F+ ... though hayfever season. 😉 We get all 4 seasons in NY - it's great.

I would definately say Brooklyn or Queens also. I haven't lived there for awhile, but I know places like Astoria in Queens, and Carrol Gardens/Greene Pointe in Brooklyn had *decent* prices at the time.

Brooklyn.
Its the current hot spot, so prices are definatly on the rise. Still a good deal though.

Try looking on the UWS. There are some decent apts that aren't too expensive from the 90's -120's

Where are the bars? Are there any on UWS? I think the place I'm in for my first two months is gonna be on UES. Anything to do around these places at night?

How much are places in Brooklyn? Do a lot of people have cars in Brooklyn? Do most people who live there take the train into Manhattan to work (assuming they work in Manhattan).

Trains will always be packed in the morning. In manhattan its almost impossible to get parking. I say go to the bx they have very cheap rent, you can get like a 2-3 bedroom for 1k - 1.5k a one bedroom for maybe $700 - $750. The bronx might be cheaper than what I stated but its around those figures.

Mind you I live in Manhattan and currently I pay $750 for a two bedroom apartment with 1.5 baths and a huge living room. I lived there all my life though so our rent is still not as expensive as most, rent here goes for $1000 and better for new tennants now. If your intrested in looking for residence in my neighborhood its all the way uptown Manhattan past harlem, starting on 155, Washington Heights is the name of the neighborhood.
