Damn! I was all set on getting SBC/YAHOO DSL until I check with Verizon to get local phone service in my new place...a freaking $88 one time charge + $25 monthly fee completely ruined my plan :| How in the hell they charge so much for the most basic local phone service? :| It sucks to not have phone service especially when my cell phone signal is so bad in this area! :(

Anyway, I guess I will have to do without phone service, so now I am looking for cable and satellite broadband...my housemate mentioned something about wanting TV cable as well...so if there is a good deal on the combo, please let me know!

Verizon local phone service SUCKS BALL!!

Agreed. It is VERY expensive and not very fast.

I had a similar problem when we moved here - cellphone service is very bad in our house because we live kind of in between two tall hills. Also at first broadband was not available (only has been about a week), and I looked into satellite. It's prohibitively expensive to setup and keep running. And it sucks. Uploads are like twice what you get on a 56k setup and downloads only several times faster or something sad like that. And of course latency is sky high.

And (w/ sat) you can only download a certain amount of MB (Like 2-300MB) in a given time period (like 24hrs) after that they drop your speed to LESS THAN dialup.

luvya As a previous die hard advocate of BB i'm surprised at how quickly I've assimilated to dialup use. Granted, before I lost my BB, I was rarely doing large downloads and all I really did was surf the net and download music. But, even with dialup I still can surf just as much and download. Unfortunately the latter does take a while but it's still ok for a 4-5 meg mp3.

Well, I've been using dial-up for 5 years, certainly I can live with it also. But you see the problem in my first post? $88 (one time charge) + $25 monthly fee for local phone service......nay....I am not going to pay that much just to be able to use dial-up or DSL..

Wonder... is the $88charge a one time deposit that you get back when you cancel (after a year)? Some of the utility companies do stuff like this and I believe the telco does also... you have to pay it to get service if you are new to the area but then you get it back later.

25$ month and 88$ one time charge thats cheap as hell. Here it a minimum of 45$ a month and 150$ one time charge. I always laught when americans talk about "expensive", you dont know the meaning of the word. :D

That $88 is probably a deposit you get back after 1 year. I had to do something similar with Verizon and got my money back 2 months ago (with interest)
