Moving to new city with no job and bills to pay

Just wanted to hear from those who've done it and how difficult it was. Single? Married w/kids? What backup plans you had? Savings?

I have loans, student loans, vehicle loan obligations. I can probably be self sufficient for about 3 mnths before I run into financial troubles. It would be nice if I can secure a job before I leave.

I do have two steady jobs and want to quit the weekend one for now so I can probably spend some long weekend or get some time off driving to and from the cities seeking out a job. A place to stay is a nonissue.

I want to really just drop everything and move but I know it's a really really foolish idea.

I can sell the car before I leave, as that'll take out a huge chunk of my fixed obligations. But then it'll make travel difficult for seeking employment.

Company's internal transfer system offers no advantage to existing employees at all, we have to go thru the same interview process as any outsider. It'll be ideal to stay within the company, but I've also applied elsewhere as well. Can't wait for them for too long.

I had a few months pay saved up. moved cross country (twice). got lucky and found a good job in about a month.

Last time I did this was 1998 and the job market was booming. Not sure what you'll find today.

Winnipeg, MB to Calgary, AB.

Calgary is a booming town and I'm sure if I'm not picky I can find a decent job while seeking out a more ideal job.

The issue is the vehicle payments and the insurance. It's either I take it with me and try to offload it there or sell it before I go.

I moved to madison with debt and no job and 1 months rent in my pocket, its 2 years later and I have a good job and live right downtown.
