Moving to my first house... I can choose from different phone companies for local service right? How do I choose?

SO, I am moving into my first home next month. I guess now you can choose different companies for local phone service now? I am moving into a Chicago suburb by the way. How do you choose which one to go with? Also, is there someplace that will list what options I have?
