moving to Miami

hi,

the farthest i came down in FL was Tampa...now considering moving to Miami.

I see great jobs listed, i am a programmer/network admin...here in TN there is almost nothing.

Anyone in Miami cares to give me some ideas..how's living there, apt prices/rent...job-situation in general...etc...

thanks 🙂

i was thinking about doing the same thing, but the risk of the hurricanes is stopping me from doing it. i'm in maryland btw.

Used to visit there. Son-in-law lives down that way. Better brush up on your Spanish. It will make your job search much easier.

Miami is nice. I was looking to move down there a few years ago, but decided not to in the end. If you're young and like to party, there's no better place/girls than south beach

Just don't own. Rent an apartment on the 3rd-or-so floor in a big complex and you'll be safe enough.

My GF and I may be moving to Vero Beach area depending on if a potential employer agrees to my salary requirements. And besides, wouldn't a Tattoo from TLC's Miami Ink be worth it? If we do end up moving, I'm sooo driving down and getting a tattoo there. 😀

Skulls - Garver, Koi - Ami, Graffiti - Darren, Portrait - Kat

...what's Chris's specialty? But yeah, Garver's the most well-rounded for sure....I love that show.

it's hard to speak in general terms, but miami is very divided when it comes to jobs - lots of small business owners and lots of people that work for these small business owners that get paid sh!tty wages. there are few large corporations with their headquarters here - burger king, carnival and many other cruiselines. your options are somewhat limited if you're into bio/pharma, high tech, IT, etc - not many options as far as i can tell. lots of tourism jobs, of course there's retail (barf), and you'll have your miscellaneous office jobs sprinkled all over.

real estate is very expensive - average median house prices in miami far outstrip the necessary median incomes to afford such homes.

i have very intelligent friends that have had a difficult time finding jobs. one particular friend from upenn is getting paid much less than he deserves (~50k). he works at an architecure and planning firm. my salary is $20-30k less than the average national salary for my position. granted i'm in a unique situation, but i get the general feeling from people that wages are too low to support the expenses in this city, as compared to other locations in the us.

i would do some research on firms that are in your particular field of interest and see if there's any presence in miami and, of course, if they're hiring.
