Moving to Mandrake...suggestions?

Ok, I've had enough with Windows and want to see if I could survive using mandrake linux, the ximian desktop (because it looks real nice) and GIMP for my web development.

What do you guys think? Will it cut down on my efficiency? Is Mandrake the way to go for a desktop linux? Should I not even do this?

I'd like to have apache, php, mysql and all that enabled since that is what I deal with on a daily basis...but I also do most of the design for my company, so I wonder if the GIMP is going to do me any good.

I have used Mandrake 7.2, 8.0, and 8.1 and liked them all. Depending on your hardware setup, I would go with the either one. Just make sure that your hardware is compatible (both with Mandrake and XFree86). I would be willing to sell you my used copy of Mandrake 8.0. I bought it, but rarely used it so, I got rid of it. I have the 3 cds, manual, boot disk. If you are interested, LMK and we can work something out. I hope you have fun with Linux, b/c it is cool, but I am not using it 100% because of compatibility, software, and the fact that I cant afford another monitor. If you need anything else, PM me or .e-mail me😎

Download Gimp for win32, I'm not sure how far behind gimp for Linux (if at all) so if you need any features check the Gimp or Linux page before dismissing it.

I don't have a direct link handy, sorry.

I think what I am going to do is borrow a hard drive from work, install Mandrake on it, and switch drives in my box...so I Don't have to worry about dual booting or anything. See how that goes for a week, and make a decision.

I am really into the ximian desktop, any comments on that?

The version of Gnome included with Mandrake usually has all the Ximian additions already included. The only real difference is, if recall correctly, the lack of the Ximian update utility. Ximian has also been notorious for screwing up the menus of distributions (such as Mandrake) that include their own menuing system. Personally I'd stick with the version of Gnome that is included on the installation disks if you really want to use a Gnome desktop.

Hmm...my biggest reason for wanting ximian was the update utility. I know my way around linux, but I'm not too familiar with updating software or anything...I've compiled a few things here and there, but I thought of that ximian update thing as a real good idea. Do they have the program seperate from ximian desktop?

If you know your way around enough to get Debian installed it's software updating software can't be beat. Debian is an acquired taste though.

Really...well, I am trying it out for a desktop OS, so I hear mandrake is the best for that.

I am more comfortable with FreeBSD, because that's the server we run at work.

If you want a nice and painless update feature in a Linux OS then go with SuSe 7.3. The way they handle updates is very easy and almost idiot proof. Just go to Yast2 in KDE or Gnome and click on online updates then click on automatic updates( or manual if you know what you are doing ) and go grab yourself a beer.

Debian has all the same packages as Mandrake (minus their config tools), I use it as my desktop OS just fine. They have >8000 packages in their on-line repositories, I very rarely have to look for and download an app manually.
