Moving to Las Vegas and I dont know the area...

I'm going to be moving to Las Vegas in August and I really dont know the area. Because I've been so busy I havent been able to go down there and search the area yet, although I will before I go down to move. Can anyone tell me the areas that I want to avoid - the more scary part of town? Also, I'm going to be going to UNLV so I dont have loads of cash - where is a good area that isnt too pricey but not a dump?

Local Paper

1 bedroom
Motel type places can start at $300.
Apartments from $450
Nice Complexes from $600

Have not found areas of town that I am afraid to go into.
There are areas of town apparently where my daughter will prefer to avoid.
Small pockets will exist. IF you are concerned about an area, check with the PD for guidance.

Bring plenty of drinkling water, you are coming at the worst time for dehydration.

Stay away from north las vegas and downtown(not the strip). Those are the bad areas. Also, the cost of living (well buying a house) seems to be getting more and more expensive. I've had neighbors sell their house for more than twice what they paid last year.

I heard there are places in the newer areas of North Las Vegas; I'm not talking about the area with all the white trash that you see the LVMPD beating up on cops, though.
