Moving to Dallas!

Headed to GM Arlington in the next few weeks to work in Logistics. I'm gonna be in an extended stay hotel for a bit, but plan to purchase a home in about 6 months or so.

What are the areas to avoid?

I"m told the nicer areas are Keller, Mansfield, and Grapevine. Any other areas of choice.

Also, is Verizon FiOS or anyone else with FiOS in the area?

Mansfield is a growing area, however I want to say it is somewhat expensive (not sure) My parents live off Greenville and Little Rd. exit off I-20 in Arlington, not a bad area. Just stay away from Cooper since it is where the mall is and the street sucks near the hwy!

I agree with Elfenix, Grapevine just sucks overall. There are some ghetto regions to Arlington, however I moved out there after High School and so I spent most of my time in Dallas/Mesquite area, which is where I grew up and I work. So, I dont know the area all that well.

I would recommend Cedar Hill or Arlington. Stay away from Grand Prairie.

Cedar Hill has a lot of new developments - retail, service, and residential. Arlington is better established, but as someone else noted, there are some bad areas in Arlington. There are also some decently nice areas, though the houses demand higher prices.

Well I plan to be in an apartment for about 6 months so that I can scour the area. They are moving me out there on the 24th, and I have never even been to Texas, so this will be quite the adventure for me. But I'm young (24) so I don't mind all the uncertainty.

Grape Vine isn't that bad. There are some nice residential developments, but a lot of apartment communities. Sure, there is a massive outlet mall, but there is also a Bass Pro Shop! :beer:

Arlington has a lot of things, Six flags, Hurricane Harbor, the Cowboys, the ballpark, a fairly progressive city government, you'll like the area.

You have to hit downtown Ft. Worth in the evening, it's pretty damn cool. They've invested millions to make it a nice place to hang out.

Im also partial to Ft Worth, although our property taxes are the highest in state. But if I were working in Arlington, I would live in Arlington.

To give a better indication, I'm only going to be making ~45K to start, so I won't be living in some plush neighborhood I imagine. I don't know how the cost of living is in all the surrounding towns.

I want to get a cheap apartment for about 6 months to a) make sure the job/area is a good fit and b) save money for a downpayment because I have been laid off for 12 weeks this year, and my savings has dwindled to make ends meet.

There are some nice areas in Irving, but it might still be dry (meaning you really need to stock up on liquor/beer for weekends if you're into that).

OP, if you are going to work in Arlington, look for a house in Arlington. It's a great place to live, in the middle of the metroplex and your commute will be ~20 minutes or less. I'd suggest N or S Arlington areas.

far from where you'll be, but I lived in Plano and Addison Circle for some years, loved it...probably not the lowest cost of living I could've found at the time, but coming from NYC it was a bargain for me

Bahh, Screw Bass Pro, Cabela's in Ft. Worth is where it's at.

If you're going to work in Arlington at the GM plant, you'll probably want to stay on the south side of town. If you move more towards Ft. Worth houses will be cheaper.

I have a house in Richardson now and it's a nice area, but you'd be looking at an hour and a half drive each way.

South Arlington is the bad part of Arlington. There are some nicer areas by UT Arlington.

I live in Arlington, just north of I20 right by Lake Arlington. I consider the area nice. The city is a mixed bag but it definately has some nice areas in both the North and some in the South. If you enjoy Parks there are lots of nice areas to live in the City.

If you're working in Arlington, then Keller or Arlington are your best places to look. Some of Arlington is a little (ok a LOT) ghetto, so I'd look very closely at your surrounding neighborhoods too.

Avoid: East Cliff

They <DFW newspaper I think> did a survey and here are the top 10 areas:

1. University Park
2. Southlake
3. Colleyville
4. Tropy Club
5. Parker
6. Highland Park
7. Murphy
8. Highland Village
9. Keller
10. Flower Mound

With the OP's stated income he's not going to be living in any of those areas. Murphy is possible, but that's farther from his work site than my place.

I feel for you man. I was asked to move to plano by my former company and I quit. Joined another company here in the bay area and got a significant bump in my salary.
