Well, I just accepted a job offer in Dallas, Texas and now I need to find a place to live.
Info about me:
I'm a single man, no pets.
My new job will be in downtown Dallas.
I currently live in Houston.
Looking for something under $1k a month rent.
Open to anything, give me ideas on where to start my search

I would like to be in a area with some culture. If you have ever been to Houston then think Montrose and other assorted neartown areas. I love the older building that have character, and artistic communities that build up around them.
So DFW residents any suggestions or comments?

Addison is a very nice area. So is North Richland hills (a little far from Dallas). Plano is right on the Tollway and easily accessable. I'd go with Addison or Plano. My ex-girlfriend lived in Plano and there are TONS of nice things around there (gigantic mall, really nice restaurants, up-town dallas is very close, etc)

You will easily be able to find a place for less than $1k...

I don't really associate Dallas with a lot of culture..maybe Deep Ellum, but that's kinda ghetto (and not really "culture"). I would live in Uptown area, but you may have to pay $1100 for a 1 bdrm. But worth it to be able to walk to all of the bars and stuff, and really close to downtown.

You don't have to be from Houston to say that. I'm from Kingsville, and having lived in San Antonio and Houston ... why the hell would you move to Dallas? Ugh, could never live there.

Suburbia isn't exactly what I think he is going for. But yeah there are lots of places for less than 1K available, too. Uptown is probably the pricest/trendiest area of Dallas.

Screw Deep Ellum. That area sucks. Uptown is where it's at.

Is SMU in Dallas? When I was there for a show, one of the trainers showed me around - there was a nice midtown area I think. (Can't remember for sure if that was Dallas or Houston, we went to both) Seemed like a nicer neighborhood with a great nightlife...but what do I know, I was there for 4 days :p

Rockets>Mavs, therefore Houston>Dallas. Though think we can atleast all agree either is better than San Antonio.

There were some fairly nice and affordable places near Lovers Lane and the tollway when I lived there. Don't know it they're still nice or affordable, but it was a good location then. Technically a part of Park Cities, but not nearly as expensive.

I would second uptown if you want to stick to dallas, but check out the downtown area as well.

Manor house, at commerce and field may fit the bill, and they just finished a new 7-11! across the street, whoo hoo. THere are also some spots on Ross just outside of downtown, but it gets ghetto real quick.

Suburbs that you may like and have a somewhat easy access to the Downtown Dallas, Plano(South on 75 or Tollway), and Arlington (30 east all the way in).

I live in Arlington nice parks, easy access to DFW airport and in the middle of Dallas/Fort Worth.

right south of SMU is a pretty nice area for yups (immediately west of SMU is about the ritziest area in texas, dub is building his new house there). nicer than midtown houston, at least. basically, anything near SMU on that side of 75 (iirc) is great.

Oh, I'll agree QueenRobot. I would rather not move, I love Houston and all my family is here, but can't turn down this job either. I am hoping that I'll be able to relocate back to Houston after a year.

That is what I'm afraid of. Is Fort Worth any better? I'm told that I can ride a train from Fort Worth to near my new job.

I'll check out Deep Ellum when I head up there next week to meet with the new boss. I don't mind a bit of ghetto if it is made up for with some style.

And yes, I'm looking to stay away from the burbs. I'll look into uptown, can you give me a heads up on about where that is?

EDIT:
South of SMU, like between Mockingbird, I-75, and Hillcrest, or the other side of 75?

I just remember a couple blocks of bars/clubs that seemed more like 25+, at least. I distinctly remember one irish pub that had the best selection of Belgian beers (tap and bottle) that I've seen in a pub of that size. It was awesome. We then watched some baseball or something at a sports bar down the street that was amazingly packed - they also played flip cup at the tables. :p
