You could do it if you want to appear as more of a douche looking to brown nose, rather than a co-worker helping a co-worker.

Personally, I wouldn't. You'd taking some of the coworker's glory. If the boss doesn't need to know, I wouldn't tell him. Take that as you like. I'm not big on the corporate games, but games are how you get ahead :^/

I'd just casually mention it in the next 1:1 with your boss when he asks what's been going on in the last week. No need to make a big deal, but no reason not to make yourself look good too. I wouldn't do it where it's obvious to your co-worker, tho.

I agree.

If there aren't any work issues between you and your co-worker, I don't see the need to CC your boss.

Personally, I think the favor you're doing to your friend in somewhat secret is greater than doing the favor but making it public. A stronger working relationship with your co-worker is better than a little sucking up to the boss.

If I was your boss and I got copied on that, I would reply all asking why you sent it to me.

Does the email contain info the boss needs to know ASAP? If so, go ahead and CC. If not, don't bother.

I'd only CC the boss, if the guy is really strict on what project(s) you spend your 40 hours/week on. My boss, for example, requires that I keep an "report" of what tasks I work on and how long I worked on said tasks (including assisting co-workers).

Quite frankly I'm sick of the minute details, but again it's up to the boss

Indeed. If you're managing 10 people, the last thing you want is 10 people sending you a bunch of random shit you don't care about.

OP should probably keep a detailed journal of everything he does at work. When your boss asks wtf you did for the last couple weeks, you could open it up and read everything you did. You changed this code thing, you helped a coworker with this, you send a project to some dude, you fixed the coffee machine, etc. Keep details records of everything just in case someone asks, but don't tell people unless they ask.

My boss asks us to CC him on stuff like this that is time sensitive just so he can keep tabs on the status of the project. I'd CC him on it, but for me it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary like I was looking for extra recognition. If your boss doesn't like updates like that I wouldn't bother.

I send my manager a weekly email on Fridays with what taks I have worked during the week. Other than that, I don't talk to her aside from passings in the hall.

Unless the boss is wondering what that crap he has been doing all week.

I wouldn't copy the boss unless there was a specific reason. If someone challenges how you spent your time or something you could always pass that along.

This is the best advice in this thread.

Followed closely by this.
