Moving supplies for the poor?

Need some tips for an upcoming move. I need to find a place where I can get packing tape somewhat cheap and a good source for boxes (free ones)

Last year when I moved, the movers said padding the furniture was free but they didn't mention anything about the tape. I didn't think about asking about it and I paid for it. They charged me about $3.50 per roll of tape they used and they used about 30-40 rolls.

So my goal this time is to purchase my own tape in bulk and get them to use it. Plus it comes in handy when I pack up my boxes.

As for boxes, I did hit up the grocery stores last time and did ok by that method. I was just wondering if you guys might have a better source that won't smell like bananas 😀

First of all, make sure they'll let you make them use your tape... they may have some requirement that they use their own tape or your stuff is not insured.

Secondly, for boxes - cardboard dumpsters. There was one behind the mall near where I went to college, I got great boxes out of there. Nice sized ones. Boxes from shoe stores are good.

Good point on the first thing. That would suck if they claim that my stuff won't be insured.

Boxes from Costco? ...similar to the grocery store, but I would think they'd be more likely to have larger ones, that might not smell like bananas.

Not that this is of any help, but when i moved over the summer the best boxes we got were monitor boxes. Those things are sturdy/durable and can hold a lot of weight. 🙂 We happened to know someone who worked in an office that was getting a whole bunch of monitors coming in and he kept the boxes for me.

That does help actually. I just told the IT guys to keep all incoming sturdy boxes for me 🙂

Why are you considered poor? You can't afford moving supplies but you can afford a computer, internet access, and time to post nearly 12,000 times?

Many moving companies will have boxes that were previously used and picked up.

All you will have to do is re-tapes them and they are good to go.

Let your fingers do some walking.

Well I suppose it's more like I don't want to be a chump that ends up throwing his money away for boxes and expensive tape when it could be cheaper.
How the hell do you think I was able to afford a computer? 😛

Do they give those boxes away? If so, time to load up the grand marquis 😀

What I have done is to contact local moving companies which are nationwide and explain that they moved me a few years ago, and I am now moving to another place in town.
I would like to get some used boxes to pack up some things.

Most every time, they just say to come on down and take my pick of 4-5 crates of boxes of different sizes. I choose the sizes and quantity I want and put them in the vehicle.

Usually there is a cold six pack of soda in the car as a thank-you, along with something for the lady that answered the phone and put me in contact the the proper people.

Figure those boxes will cost $3-5 at a U-Haul store; I can get 10-20 boxes for the cost of the soda and a trinket. Very cost effective. 😀
