Moving sucks

I am moving in 3 weeks from Gainesville, FL to Atlanta, GA (about 330 miles). I have a 1 br apt and the movers are giving me prices ranging from $1500 - $2500, 3300 - 4500 lbs. Of course, none of them will come in to see my place because it is so small.

I am thinking of renting a u-haul one way and moving the things I can handle by myself in the uhaul and throwing away/giving away the rest like my couch and bed. The rest of my stuff should easily fit into a fairly small uhaul that I priced at $500 + gas.

I am going to slowly pack my stuff up over the next couple of weeks and try to get it done early. I just can't imagine it being that much stuff especially since I have a lot of clothing to throw out and just old stuff that I don't need anymore. I have some clothes, some books, some linens, kitchen stuff, and some random computer stuff.

Until I got my own furniture, I moved myself using my car making about 3 trips. I just can't justify spending $2000 - 2500 on this when that is the value of the stuff I would have to replace and it is not in the best shape. The bed is pretty old and a hand-me-down from my parents. The couch is probably as old as I am and recovered two or three times and ravaged by my dog. I can't imagine their value is more than $50 - $100 each. The rest of it is either used or Target/Wal-mart crap. To pay so much to move them seems ridiculous.

Does anyone have any experience similar to this or any suggestions?

No, it isn't worth paying someone $100 to move a $50 couch. Just think positively. Think of it as a great time to rid yourself of those things that are low quality - such as that couch. Things that you can slowly replace with quality items, exactly what you want, in your new home.

Just don't throw anything out. Donate what you can't sell to charity. Get a massive tax deduction. I forget which one, but either the Salvation Army or Goodwill will come to your place with a truck and haul away couches free of charge (and you still get a good tax deduction for the donation). If you don't itemize, let a family member who does get the tax savings and hand it over to you.

Thanks for the advice. I think they are worth more in time and effort and deductions to donate than to try to sell. I will evaluate the situation after I have packed a bit and see what to do. I will definitely call to donate if I am throwing it out and give them the chance since this stuff is all perfectly usable just not "nice" (I was willing to move it and keep using it). That is a good idea about the deductions though. I think my parents are deducting itemized this year so I can pass it on to them.

If you have a large amount of donations, call them up. Many have a truck and labor to pick up things.

Unless you have everything possible boxed up, always get a truck that is sized for 1 room more than you have. Try to keep the boxes all the same size groups. Easier to stack when loading the truck.

Pack bedding/clothes in drawers; pull the drawer out before loading and unloading.
Cuts down space and also helps organize.
Use blankets for padding around furniture.

They just built a massive IKEA here in Atlanta. Chuck your stuff and buy nice, cheap stuff when you get here.

OP,

PURGE as much stuff as you can. Whenever we move, there's always at least 20 or so black Hefty bags that i feel up with meaningless crap that you don't need.

Donate clothes, etc. to goodwill. Sell electronics stuff on FS/FT, and throw stuff away that you don't need.

I agree, leave behind anything that isn't absolutely essential. You can put stuff up on craigslist's free section or give em off to the Salvation army. Furniture, old clothes, you name it. Anything you haven't used more than a year, and are unlikely to ever use in the next year... DUMP. It's easier and cheaper to dump it now, and buy it again IF you ever need it.

Yeah. The more I think about it, the better the option it is for me to just donate the big and old stuff and move the things I care about, are small, or are valuable. Only sad thing is that I might have to grab a Greyhound to get back from Atlanta to get my car since Uhaul says you can't tow my car because it is too low to the ground or some nonsense.

I think it would be more fun to buy new things and spend the money on a new bed and new couch instead of moving an old one for the same cost.

When I moved 55 miles from my campus apartment to my new apartment, the company paid like $3000 for these goof-balls to show up and pack my stuff. It was fast and easy for me, but I felt bad about wasting $3000 (even if it wasn't mine).

It was amazing, though. I'd never been "moved" before. They packed everything in paper and put it in a box. Can of corn, wrapped in paper, into the box. Plastic cups from the football game, packed in paper, into the box. Garden hose, packed in paper, thrown into its own box.

It's certainly faster to get moved by others (assuming no one helps you pack if you do it alone), but if it was going to be my money, I'd do it myself.

Moving does suck. I've down it twice in the past two years.

get rid of as much as you can stand and then move the rest yourself
good luck
atlanta is nice overall, traffic sucks monkey butt
