Moving/Remounting PSU?

I am trying to put back together an Athlon XP 2600+ system and need some suggestions about how to try to cool it better. Prior to it being moved with me to Japan, it would shut down regularly due to heat. In the case I had in the states and here, there is only about 1/2" of room between the top of the CPU fan (which is really loud) and my idea is to move the PSU to the bottom of the case.

My idea is to take out the PSU, and somehow mount it to the bottom of the case. My MB has a good 3-4" of room since its a MicroATX case in an ATX case.

Is this possible? If so, any suggestions of how to mount it on the bottom of the case? Also, my MB is incompatable with the Zalman 7000 cooler according to their site, does anyone have recommendations of a good but quiet XP cooler?

Thank you!

Few things.
1) What power supply?
2) Would you be willing to cut a hole in the top of your case?
3) What kind of case (How many intake/outake fans, what size, positioning.)

I see a few options..
Bottom mounting is one of them, but then you have to deal with mounting and everything else.
A better solution, IMO, would be to cut a blowhole in the top of your case and have your PSU feed through it.

Welcome to the AT forums.

Actually it would be nice to know the make and model of the case and the PSU in question. makes for better visualization and suggestions. In fact, any time you have a question all pertinent info should be posted up front. Makes things quicker and answers better.

Case: Generic ATX case about 8"W x 16"H x 18xD. Has three drive 5.25" drive bays and 2 3.5" bays externally, 3 more internally. As I was looking on NewEgg for a simliar case I realized that most cases being sold today have the power supply mounted at the top where as in my case the PSU is mounted sideways just to the right of the CPU.

PSU: Evergreen Silent King 4 (400W) (Specs look very similar to the CoolMax "PCI Express" model. All of the cables are really long

MB: Soyo SY-K7VME (KT400)
CPU: Barton 2600+
RAM: 768MB DDR
HD: 300gb Seagate PATA

I am willing to buy a new case (the one I have was a freebe. Was trying to put the system back together on the cheap but I would like to see the sys be quiet and cool.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah, if you don't want to spend much, it would probably be OK to play around with what you have. If you mount the PSU on the bottom and cut the intake for the 120mm fan hole into the bottom and an exhaust hole in the back, you would then have space where the PSU was to add one or more exhaust fans for the system. Does it have any intake fans on the front - need to add one if not.
The Aerocool Masstige is designed for a bottom PSU with the air intake for it on the bottom of the case.
