Moving queen mattress on Explorer

I'm moving a mattress + box spring on an Explorer about 9 miles in a week, any tips? I have parallel roof racks, would it be enough to just put some ratchet straps around the front and back?

Would it be any advantageous to do it in the windows of the car or roof rack?

I have transported a mattress on a volvo SUV racks and I was fine with a few stretchable, rubber straps.

Two is fine but if you have a third you can run from the front to the back of the mattress it helps to keep the nose from lifting. Just put it on the roof too the back so that it isn't hanging over the windshield and catching air.

Just hold on to it. Should be fine...

Couple of ratchet straps, low speed, and recheck to make sure it stays secured.

I strapped a queen size mattress and box spring to the roof of an Audi wagon and drove 70 miles at freeway speeds.

I got all the way home safely but almost collided with some dickhead in my alley.

Strap it down good, if you can do one front to back to help restrain it from lifting or shifting back it's a little extra insurance. If you're really worried about it just don't get on the freeway, 9 miles won't take that long if you chose to go a bit slower.

I've done this several times. One note: if the wind catches the fabric stuff on the box spring in just the right way, eventually it will shred it - similar to how old flags wear out from perpetually being in the wind. That's only happened once though, but worth noting - placing a big tarp over the roof, then wrapping the box spring & mattress before strapping the whole thing down might be a good idea to protect it from such a problem & also protect them from any unforeseen circumstances.
