Moving out of state, need moving truck

lokiju

Lifer
I'm moving from south FL to north of Atlanta, GA total trip is about 663 miles one way at the end of April.

I've never moved on out of state and had to rent a truck before, after looking online at all the major truck rental places I could think such as U-Haul, Ryder, Budget, and Penske. I was amazed at how f'ing much a truck rental cost!

For about a 16' truck on way I'm looking at around $1,000 and that doesn't count gas!

I was wondering if there are any other options out there that I'm just not think of and what is everyones recommendation that has done this before?

that is about right

in 1998 when i moved from upstate NY to atlanta i paid about $1600 for a one way using a 20 ft Penske truck and a 2 wheel car dolly

Damn, guess I'm gonna have to bend over and take it 🙁

Just didn't think it would cost so f'ing much for a moving truck rental.

Avoid Uhaul like it's the plague. If a Uhaul guy tries to talk to you, splash hot coffee in his face and run away screaming.

don't get a Uhaul
book the penkse online now! even if your not sure of the date.
you can always change the date or cancel
prices are likely to go up, but you can lock in the price now

Is there an advantage to Penkse over the others?

They seems to be a bit more expensive but not a whole lot more.

Score another one AGAINST uhaul. They are just terrible.

I went with Budget and was pleased with the whole experience (if that can be possible moving).

penske has some of the newest trucks and great service.
if they are a little more expensive, call them after you book online and say "so and so is cheaper. can you match?"

When we moved my wife from Montreal to Virginia after we were married in 1985 it cost us $500.00 to rent a Ryder truck one way. That was the cheapest alternative we could find at that time.

My first thought is that the price was high because it was a one-way rental, but isn't most of that charge for the per-mile charge?

If you want to entertain yourself sometime, check the cost of one-way truck rentals from San Francisco to Las Vegas, and then check the cost of the same one-way rental but going the opposite direction. Clearly people are bailing out of California.

yes, the daily rate is pretty much the same as a local rental, but they add however much per mile, that adds it up fast

and then the 5-6 mpg the truck gets sucks the $ out of your CC

Both Budget and U-haul come with 800 plus miles then they charge per mile after that, all places I've checked for out of state one way make you rent the truck for at least 4 days which kind of sucks also since I'll only need it for 3.

The miles aren't an issue since it's under 700 miles for my trip though.

oh
i guess they changed the rate structure

you could sell most your stuff and just get someone with a pickup truck to take the rest

or hire a moving company, then it'll be $5000 - $50,000

sorry, i know that doesn't help. be sure to keep all your reciepts and consult your tax advisor as to the deductibility of any of your moving expenses

Another vote for Penske. When I moved from Western NY to Virginia Beach it was about 1200 for a truck and car carrier. I ended up not using the car carrier so it was just under $1000. The truck was great. Pretty much brand new, everything worked. The earlier you book, the cheaper it costs. I believe if you have AAA, there is a discount for that too.

I keep hearing about AAA discounts, but doesn't cost about $59 to join AAA?

If you are single, pack light and sell your old furniture.

If you have a family, better just takte the hit and get a truck.

It doesn't take anything special to be a Uhaul store. Basically, they're 2 or 3 steps below a used car salesman on the scum-chain.

Who knows...you might be able to buy an old moving truck for a few grand....then turn around and sell it for the same money you bought it for when you're through.

I wish this were an option but it would cost me more to sell everything and buy again than it would to rent a truck even at $1,000.

Most people would be surprised at how often it could be cheaper to ditch the big items before moving and replace them at the new location, because of how much it costs to move long distances.
