So one of my friends is going away for college and his parents are paying for his rent.

Would you considered my friend "moved out" or does the phrase extends to being financially independent?

He has literally moved out.

I don't understand why this is a question. If I didn't consider him "moved out" I'd be in the same position as moonbogg, creating narrow definitions and being mad when other people refuse to stop using the actual dictionary definition.

He is moved out. Unless he has to move back in after college.

Sounds like you're arguing over semantics because you still live with mom and pop and don't want homeboy to get the upper hand.

"Moving out" is moving out. That means means taking all your possessions and leaving with no intention of returning.

I'm guessing (s)he still has a room at his/her parents house with his/her crap in it awaiting their return. That's questionable as to have moved out.

It isn't about who is paying. Otherwise, a lot of divorced women never "moved out".

Means he went to college.

I doubt I'd even call that moved out, and a long ways from financially independent.

Someone I know has "moved out" with his girlfriend, sorry, "fiancé"... except he goes back to parents' house daily to shower, have dinner with "fiancé" on mom's dime, use his mom's car, eat alone, do laundry, and "visits" if the girlfriend is out of town and "visits" until she comes back.

Colleges used to close down for various holidays and of course summer. If that's still true, they need an additional (home) address.

Yea, moved out.

I've also seen many/most of my friends do very well after folks have helped out with moving out expenses be that rent or down payment on home. I think greasing that pathway is smart based on how i've seen folks move along that route.
