Moving old HD to an Xbox360 S 4GB

A friend of mine is getting one of the free Xbox360 S 4GB models with the purchase of a Samsung laptop. Would I be able to pull the HD from my current old white Xbox360 and put it in the new S model?

Yup. Just take the actual hard drive out of the old gray enclosure and throw it in one of these. Or just plug the bare drive in, it'll just be wobbly.

Also, ignore the guy who is going to post and say it will get you banned. He always posts in these threads and uses a random xbox forum poster as proof (not a MS employee, just some random guy who says that it is not allowed)

I use one like this and have for years. The original system died, so we swapped the drive in to a new one.

Despite the official line, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that MS does not ban for hard drive swapping, "generic" drives, or cloned firmware.

Yes you can do that. Thats how mine is, I spent good money on a 120gb drive and did not want to bother swapping cages or getting a larger drive and transferring my content. Opened up the original drive case and put it in my console. It does move around a little bit, but should not be a problem if your console just sits there.

Can't you also format an external hard drive, like from a PC, and use it via the USB ports?
