moving mouse disconnects modem?

Here's the deal, I went over to help someone with some computer problems they were haivng today, they had a couple viruses, lots of software just deleted instead of uninstalled and their HD was a mess in general. I formated it and began teh windows reinstall. (P2 gateway machine btw) Anyway upon reinstalling windows I noticed the mouse was "sticky" in that it didnt track smoothly and just kinda jumped all over. The rollers and ball are all clean too. Hmmmm I though it was odd, but I prefer to work without a mouse so I decided I'd work on that later and proceeded to get their modem working and setup. Well I've noticed that if you bump the mouse (ps2 intellimouse) the modem disocnnects. No report conflicts for irqs or io's in teh device manager either. Any ideas?

It appears to me that you're modem and mouse are sharing the same irq ir comm port.

You just about have to have an IRQ conflict. Make sure the mouse get IRQ 12 if it's a PS2. Have you disabled any unused Com ports in the Bios? If not, Consider doing so, then remove the modem in device manager, reboot let windows redetect it, and see if it doesn't grab IRQ3 or 4 (whichever is available). Force it there if you have to. Also make sure the jumpers , if any, on the modem are set to "plug and play" or equivilent.

Thats what I'm thinking as well, but the mouse was on 12, and the modem was on 5 (com2), com1 has 4....I really cant find a conflict with this beast anywhere, can the irq controller fail and do this perhaps?

I'd call gateway and have them fix it. I refuse to work on any machine except a homebuilt. If it has a problem, I make them take it to the manufacturers

Shouldn't the Irq be 3 for that COM PORT? Also Check for some Ghost Drivers under Safe Mode, There probably aren't any but it can't hurt. Also Make sure the mouse for some reason isn't getting its memory adress mapped onto the Com port for the modem I have seen it happen in very rare situations and if it is the case fiddle with the driver install and it will be corrected.
