I am helping a friend setup a brand new Windows 7 machine, and they are moving off of an older iMac. They currently do a lot of photo work and have an ~250GB iPhoto library that needs to get moved to the new machine. I am not all that familar with iPhoto and just trying to figure the best way to move all the photos (I am a Lightroom and Picasa user myself). I could use some advice/suggestions. Is iPhoto database driven like Lightroom? For example....will I need to do a massive export from iPhoto of everything in order to preserve edits, tagging, ect?

Yes, it's like Lightroom and there's a lot of metadata (and editing history) stored in the database. (Well, an XML file anyway.)

There's a rather long set of directions here involving the Aperture free trial.

If you're quite clever, you might be able to save most of your metadata.
