Hey guys, I move into my new apartment in a few days. I am wanting to get internet through either DSL or CABLE. Which of the 2 would be cheaper to have installed and ordered(total cost to get up and running).

Also, at the same time, I want to order either cable tv or directv. Which one is cheaper? I just need some basic plus channels. Which of the 2 would be cheaper to have installed and ordered(total cost to get up and running)

I know that here at my complex a satellite dish costs like 100-200 bucks to have on your balcony or something like that, so we have cable. I would like to get DSL but we have no need for a landline so we have cable internet too.

As far as cable vs DSL, it all depends on the providers in your area.

As far as Dish vs Cable, it will normally be more costly or more work for dish since they may have to specially mount the dish, or may not even be able to mount it at all.

If you want to be really unethical, if you get cable internet, normally basica channels come over the line for free.

Also, cable internet + cable tv is normally offered at a reduced rate if you get both from the same provider.

depends on what you want /need

Cable internet is 2-4x faster then DSL and costs between 30-50$/m depending on area, DSL is typically 25-35$/m

you get a discount if you have cable TV and Internet from the same place

Direct TV will be cheaper for teh Tv part, however you will need that dish and not all apts will let you put one up

I don't know if Charter offers internet without cable TV, but I would think it would be more expensive that way. You usually get a discount on a package deal. I have Charter cable TV, but decided to get DSL instead of going with them because I'd heard of problems from people with needing to have multiple visits by technicians setting up the Charter connection. With my DSL, I just called, they sent everything and I set it up myself.

The people who had this apartment before me had DirectTV and it sounded like they had to go through a lot to get it hooked up and working properly. My mother was going to get it at her house, but they were there for two days climbing all over the house and garage and setting a post in different spots trying to get reception and never could. The stupid post is still there and they left holes in her yard that had to be filled in.

Cable vs. DSL for me was..

SBC (3mbps for $24.99, 1 yr contract) vs Comcast 4mbps ($19.99 for 6 months, 42.99 afterwards) we don't have expanded cable so no 6mbps for us. If we had expanded, I would've gone with Comcast 6mbps hands down, but one of our guys needs a friggn land line so we got SBC. What do we get? We get 3mbps. No more, no less. At home, I get well more than 4mbps (we haven't gone to 6mbps yet in our neighborhood), and so I appreciate getting overspec... Bleh.

My roommate's arguemnt is that SBC's ping is better. MY foot. I was getting 300 ping in BF2 last night and no one was downloading. I even turned Azureus to 5kb/sec uploads and finally off and I was spiking like crazy. Our internet just blows.

I support Comcast > SBC. If you work out the $$$, Comcast is cheaper becuase I could care less about a land line...
