Moving HDD to new system

I've got a Maxtor 80GB drive I'd like to move from my old Dell 4600 to a system I've built using the P5NSLI mobo.

The drive is recognized but the cylanders / sectors are wrong. I tried to edit manually, lets me type in new info but when I enter is th old infor is still there.

Any thoughts?

What you want to do violates the terms of the license for your Dell branded copy of Windows XP. Buy a legal copy.

thoughts..? yes ..will the 80gb still be able to bootup on the Dell once you've screw it up ..? most likely..no

get another hd and either run ubuntu(free) or get a xp cd oem for your new build

Could I move the old boot HDD to a USB enclosure and boot off that, then use Ghost or something to copy the image?

Thanks,
-Buzz

ok..here's the deal the xp install on the 80gb is a Dell oem ..the EULA is tied to the Dell...you can Ghost the contents of the drive put it on your new build possibly even get to boot but that OS would not be legal under Microsoft's terms... still the simplest would be to purchase an xp oem cd and product key to do it correctly...or you can go vista (32bit version) and possibly get a key(those who have a key can have up to 10 installs on 1 key per MS) for that which would be time limited tho,,,gl
