Moving gpu to pcie 2, good idea?

My 2 slot 6870 sits in slot 1, pci sound card in pci slot 2. There is very little space between the 2 cards. Would it be helpful to move the 6870 to pcie slot 2 to create a larger gap between the two?

I was thinking this would help improve case airflow around the gpu and lower temps. Also, I get interference when using headphones on the front panel during games only (not during music or movies). So perhaps this would reduce or eliminate the interference.

Asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard.

I faced a similar choice, and went ahead and moved the video card. But in my situation I downgraded from 16x to 8x. Although the hit in performance was nearly zero due to the lower 8x interface, I was able to achieve a higher overclock due to the improved airflow through the case and the video card and get better performance overall.

What are any reasons why you wouldn't want to move your video card to improve cooling? Are your slots both 16x, then no reason to hold off. Or, can you move the sound card instead?

I am pretty sure on this motherboard the first two slots are 16x. Reason I asked the question is I think I recall reading somewhere you should always use the first slot for a single gpu setup.

Can't move the sound card. The motherboard has 2 pci slots, and the first one is covered up by the gpu when the gpu is in pcie slot 1. In other words, current setup is gpu in pcie slot 1, sound card in pci slot 2. Proposed setup is gpu in pcie slot 2 and sound card in pci slot 1. That would greatly increase the distance between the two cards.

The other thing I realized is that the gpu would have to move if it was bigger than 2 slot (in other words, if I upgraded the gpu in the future to an HIS iceq card, or asus dcII that needs 3 slots).

I will try it and report back with the results.
