Moving from RAID to Raptor

So I got a good price on a WD Raptor 150GB and I intend on moving my OS to the new drive. Currently my OS is on RAID drives. I would like clone the RAID drives onto the Raptor, which should work fine with Acronis True Image, but I know the OS will crash when it reboots because of changing the storage controllers from RAID to AHCI.

The only way I can think that might work is to try a repair install on Vista after I reboot on the Raptor, no guarantees that will work though, any other ideas?

It really depends on what kind of RAID you are using. If you are using striping, then you will need to run a good imaging program to capture the array on a single drive. If you are using mirroring, either drive will work alone.

Your proposed course of action should be OK - and with Vista, a repair install is easy. Keep in mind that TrueImage 11 is the only version that will clone in Vista and not necessarily require a repair.

I'm using RAID 0, and Acronis True Image 10. I have v11 but it won't work because it will not recognize the RAID array except in Windows. It's just Intel's software RAID so I have a lot of trouble getting anything to recognize it except Vista, that's one of the reasons I want to get away from RAID.

So if the disk cloning won't work maybe I can reinstall Vista and then restore an image I made from before the reinstall, then try the repair option to fix the drivers.

I didn't know that Intel had a RAID with no controller. Strange! Have you tried doing it from within Vista? Maybe even a backup image and restore if the cloning doesn't work.

RAID 0 is such a PITA! :)

My TI 11 created Rescue CD sees my RAID 1 array just fine - but calls it SCSI. It works!

TI 11 works fine while in Vista and recognizes the drives, but if a reboot is required it won't be able to complete the operation because it doesn't see any drives. Yeah the Intel Matrix RAID is a PITA, and overall there are too many pitfalls with RAID to deal with so I'm going for simplicity now. Worst case scenario is I completely reinstall Windows, but I'm feeling kinda lazy.

I'll be sure to post back what I had to do after I get around to it.

Well it's all done and I didn't format, the cloning worked fine with TI 10. As expected, when I changed the storage controller from RAID to AHCI it would crash upon reboot. I tried everything to get it to run in AHCI mode without crashing, but I was completely unsuccessful. I decided to just run it in IDE mode, I don't need NCQ functions anyway. After setting it to IDE mode everything runs just fine, there was no need to mess around with drivers or anything.
