Hey folks, I've got the chance to sell my trusty Toshiba Qosmio w/the following :

P-M 1.8Ghz, 2MB L2
1024MB DDR400
915 Express Mainboard
PCI Express GF6600 Go w/128MB Dedicated Memory
15.4" 1280x800 Widescreen w/Brightview

and buy the following :

Acer Aspire 9300 Series
AMD Turion X2 TL-50 1.6Ghz Cpu
1024MB DDR2-533
Nvidia Nforce Mobile Chipset
Geforce 6100 PCI Express Shared Video
17' 1440x900 Widescreen TFT

Same OS, WinXP on both. Minimal cost difference to me (~$100ish)

I don't game on my notebook, but I do a ton of movie and TV episode watching (House, Lost, etc). Has anyone tried 720p Xvid/Divx/etc playback with a similar config on that resolution? I'd love to get on that 17" Screen, but hate to see the video turn out choppy :\

Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks in advance!!

Bump :( Anyone have experience running both of these processors/configurations or something close?

You'll get a good bump in processor speed (which is what limits Xvid/Divx playback in most cases) but your video card will significantly lose out going from a Go6600/128MB to Go61x0/shared. As long as you truly don't game, as you say, it should work fine. :)

Thank you M4H! I was hoping that would be the case! I was a little concerned that maybe the video would be a little choppy @ the 1440x900 playing back videos. A lot of times I'll miss a TV ep, and then I'll watch the torrent later. The HD rips look really nice!

Thanks again, I'll post back when I get the new one .. I'll miss the Qosmio, it's been a really cool notebook.

Well, keep in mind that "HD Rips" are usually half-res (960x540) ... unless you're talking about the .TS files which are original quality. :)
