ok sorry this might sound like a dumb question but......

if i upgrade my system to a cpu that supports 64 bit can i upgrade my version of xp from 32 to 64 bit or do i have to purchase a new version of xp(or new serial).

if its just a matter of finding a copy of windows that is 64 bit and i can just use the same serial then it shouldn't be a problem becuase im sure i can just find a torrent of it.

im using XP home if it matters

You can run 32bit Windows on a 64bit processor, there's no requirement to go to an x64 OS.

That said, I don't know how XP will handle the change in CPU.

You'd have to buy a new OS.

There was a time when you could upgrade XP Pro 32bit to XP Pro 64bit, for free, but I don't think that available now.

That being said, you'd still have to do a fresh install of the OS as there is no upgrade path from 32bit to 64bit Windows.

well i know i can run a 32OS on a 64 bit computer. i was just wondering that if i want to upgrade to 64 bit do i have to purchase a new serial.

o yea id definitely be doing a fresh install. i have a feeling though if i use a 64bit cd to install xp and use my 32bit serial it will work. I have done the inverse of this so thats why i think it will work.

my sister bought a laptop that had 64 bit vista installed on it. i ended up just putting windows xp on hers because she liked it better than vista and i put her 64 but vista serial on mine and i used a 32 bit copy of vista on mine to install it.

i have a feeling the serials only corresponde to the version of XP or Vista your using, not the bits.
