So here's the short of it: I've accepted a job in Vero Beach, Fl and will be moving there, from Denver, in the next month (I'm aiming for Dec. 28th). I'm tired of using rental trucks and hauling cars behind and doing all the heavy lifting myself. Also it seems, from what friends and co-workers have reported, it doesn't save me any money anyway...especially after gas in those behemoth 24' trucks.

If anyone has any recommendations or experiences they could share, I would be very appreciative. My new employer said they will help defray "reasonable" moving expenses, but to what extent I'm trying to find out. Regardless, I'm hoping I can keep the total down to around or under $2,000.
 
My move from IN to KS cost ~$5700 on United Van Lines. Good luck finding a decent moving company to make that move for $2000 or less.

Ugh! You're kidding me!

My fiance's move from LA to Denver only cost her ~$1200 (IIRC) also with United (contracted out to Crown Movers or something like that) and that's twice the distance. She did all the packing. How much stuff did you move? We're in a 2 bedroom apt.
 
There were quite a few online calculators, as far as prices go, when I was in the market.


My move was only 8 miles so my experiences don't really apply to your situation. Except for maybe your best resource for boxes will be calling your local 24hr. grocery store around 10pm and asking to speak to the night stock manager. He'll set you up.
 
quick "tip" for you on movers.

when they come to pick up your stuff just tell them there's 30 bucks and beer at the end of the day for each crew member if they take care of your stuff and your walls.

Moving long distance takes money, your employer is paying.....take advantage of it. I will never, ever move myself ever again. They come in, they hump and your move is stress free. Label properly if you pack on your own.

1 bedroom apartment of about 600 sq feet. Never got a break down on the costs, but I did do a full pack/auto move.

The packing is what kills ya on cost.
 
I moved 150 miles and it cost me $1000 to move everything from a one-bedroom apartment, and I even packed everything in boxes by myself. Most places quoted me $1500 or more. Good luck on that $2000.
 
Moved lots, the key is to inspect everything as it comes off the truck. My wife or myself sit out with a clip board, that and we spring for lots of drink and lunch for the guys.

The military is pretty good about reimbursement for damaged stuff.
 
Also, If you have to do DIY. I would avoid Uhaul if at all possible. Most of the trucks should be off the road imho. Penske has always seemed pretty good about maintenance on the trucks and the costs for one ways are pretty good. It might be worth it to do two moves with a smaller 16' truck than to try for one larger one. This is good if you have a place to sell and a bunch of stuff thats cluttering it up. The place will sell faster if you can leave furniture in it while its showing.
 
check the www.bbb.org site and also ask if thye do the packing and stuff like that if there is a seperate charges for anything. you should only pay an hourly rate. if they charge u for boxes they will put everything into boxes even stuff like chairs lol
