Moving back to Oregon, woohoo! :D

About a year and a half ago, the company I was working for in Tualatin, OR was bought out by a similarly-sized company based in McLean, VA. I am in accounting, and the company that bought us wanted to centralize the accounting dept. in VA. They offered to relocate me to Virginia and up my salary. I had lived in Oregon pretty much all my life up to that point - I was born in Portland, went to high chool in Tigard, and college at WIllamette in Salem. However, my gf was planning on going to grad school and Georgetown was her top choice, we decided to move.

Long story short, my gf did not get into Georgetown (despite having excellent qualifications, Georgetown is obviously very selective). My job has been going quite well and I have gotten a promotion and a raise, as well as a lot of good experience. And we have truly enjoyed living on the East Coast and seeing a lot of the sights and doing a ton of stuff not only in the VA/DC area but we have taken trips to Maine, NYC, Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, etc. It's been great.

But now, we realize that family and friends are what make a "home". Even though we have kept really busy, we're just lonely! And my gf has been accepted to grad school at PSU.

So, the cable guy is here to disconnect me so I will not be posting for a while. 🙂 Once I get a place in Oregon, I'll be back to full-speed neffing, though. 😉

Later, ATOT! 🙂

Congrats!

Remember the weather sucks but NO SALES TAX and if you're lazy like me you don't have to pump your own gas!

It's actually illegal to pump your own gas here in Oregon.

Oh really? Being an Oregonian for nearly 20 years I did not know that, thank you for enlightening me!

(/sarcasm)

I actually enjoy Oregon's weather. (Lived in Corvallis for about 2 years, and Lake Oswego for about 2 years.)

Sweet! Glad it all worked out for you guys to head back home. Oregon is a beautiful state! It was good though that you got the opportunity to live on the East Coast too. I hope to do that at some point.

Oh, and nice song choices in your sig. 🙂

Welcome back. 😉 I wouldn't want to live in any other state..

Maybe Washington.. But I'm biased, cause that's where my girlfriend lives.. for now.. lol

My condolences on having to move back to Oregon.

j/k

Enjoy the move back. Every time I move I always enjoy it. The question is: since your g/f has moved with you twice now, how long until we hear that you and her are officially engaged? Moving with a person is always a pretty big step, and you've done it twice now 😉

<< You'll have to take a trip to Portland so we can have a Portland ATOT meet. 🙂 >>

I'm game! 🙂

Oh... Welcome back bigsmooth. I spent the last two weeks working in Santa Clara. I'm glad to be back home.

Hi all,

I'm at my gf's parents house so I thought I'd get a quick post in while I have internet access. 😛
The move went well, there was a really large snowstorm in the plains states so we changed our route and went north to I-90, and we had good weather almost the whole time. Now comes the job hunt.
Thanks to all the well-wishers! 🙂

RossMAN, right now we are staying with some relatives temporarily in Portland around 148th and Halsey. Where we will live permanently depends on where I end up getting a job. Since my GF is going to PSU, we think somewhere on the MAX line would be good so Beaverton could be a good choice. We'll have to see, though.

<< smile. Welcome back. 😉 I live on 92nd off of johnson creek blvd. >>

Damn you live so close to me. I was just driving by Fred Meyer's off 82nd & Johnson Creek tonight.

bigsmooth. I was just in Portland/Seattle for two weeks and stayed with friends in Tigard. Why the fvck can't you pump your own gas there??

😀 It's a small world...

LMAO! I'm not sure exactly why, but you can't because it's against the law. 😉 It's not a bad thing though, it creates jobs that not many other states have...

Edit: While trying to figure out why exactly its illegal, I ran across this.. Pretty interesting..

OREGON RIDERS WIN RIGHT TO PUMP THEIR OWN GAS Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber signed House Bill 3885 into law on June 11, 2001, which gives motorcyclists the choice of fueling their own bikes. Oregon and New Jersey are the only two states which prohibit "Self-Serve" gas pumps, and now motorcycles will be the only class of vehicle allowed to actually dispense fuel into their own tanks in Oregon, effective January 1, 2002.

I found this.. It's long.

480.330

Operation of gasoline dispensing device by public prohibited. No owner, operator or employee of any filling station, service station, garage or other dispensary where Class 1 flammable liquids are dispensed at retail, shall permit any person other than the owner, operator or employee to use or manipulate any pump, hose, pipe or other device for dispensing such liquids into the fuel tank of a motor vehicle or other retail container.

480.315 Policy.
The Legislative Assembly declares that, except as provided in ORS 480.345 to 480.385, it is in the public interest to maintain a prohibition on the self-service dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids at retail. The Legislative Assembly finds and declares that:

(1) The dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids by dispensers properly trained in appropriate safety procedures reduces fire hazards directly associated with the dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids;

(2) Appropriate safety standards often are unenforceable at retail self-service stations in other states because cashiers are often unable to maintain a clear view of and give undivided attention to the dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids by customers;

(3) Higher liability insurance rates charged to retail self-service stations reflect the dangers posed to customers when they leave their vehicles to dispense Class 1 flammable liquids, such as the increased risk of crime and the increased risk of personal injury resulting from slipping on slick surfaces;

(4) The dangers of crime and slick surfaces described in subsection (3) of this section are enhanced because Oregon's weather is uniquely adverse, causing wet pavement and reduced visibility;

(5) The dangers described in subsection (3) of this section are heightened when the customer is a senior citizen or is disabled, especially if the customer uses a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair, walker, cane or crutches;

(6) Attempts by other states to require the providing of aid to senior citizens and the disabled in the self-service dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids at retail have failed, and therefore, senior citizens and the disabled must pay the higher costs of full service;

(7) Exposure to toxic fumes represents a health hazard to customers dispensing Class 1 flammable liquids;

(8) The hazard described in subsection (7) of this section is heightened when the customer is pregnant;

(9) The exposure to Class 1 flammable liquids through dispensing should, in general, be limited to as few individuals as possible, such as gasoline station owners and their employees or other trained and certified dispensers;

(10) The typical practice of charging significantly higher prices for full-service fuel dispensing in states where self-service is permitted at retail: (a) Discriminates against customers with lower incomes, who are under greater economic pressure to subject themselves to the inconvenience and hazards of self-service; (b) Discriminates against customers who are elderly or handicapped who are unable to serve themselves and so must pay the significantly higher prices; and (c) Increases self-service dispensing and thereby decreases maintenance checks by attendants, which results in neglect of maintenance, endangering both the customer and other motorists and resulting in unnecessary and costly repairs;

(11) The increased use of self-service at retail in other states has contributed to diminishing the availability of automotive repair facilities at gasoline stations;

(12) Self-service dispensing at retail in other states does not provide a sustained reduction in fuel prices charged to customers;

(13) A general prohibition of self-service dispensing of Class 1 flammable liquids by the general public promotes public welfare by providing increased safety and convenience without causing economic harm to the public in general;

(14) Self-service dispensing at retail contributes to unemployment, particularly among young people;

(15) Self-service dispensing at retail presents a health hazard and unreasonable discomfort to the handicapped, to elderly persons, small children and those susceptible to respiratory diseases;

(16) The federal Americans with Disabilities Act, Public Law 101-336, requires that equal access be provided to disabled persons at retail gasoline stations; and

(17) Small children left unattended when customers leave to make payment at retail self-service stations creates a dangerous situation. [1991 c.863 s.49a; 1999 c.59 s.160]

LMAO! I'm not sure exactly why, but you can't because it's against the law. It's not a bad thing though, it creates jobs that not many other states have...

Well, they have a long ways to go. Oregon has the highest unemployment rate in the U.S.!! I pulled up to one of those stations that only take a prepaid card and is run by the State. I walked around the place swearing and looking for someone who worked there. So they directed me to a normal station. I go there and start to pump my gas and the guy says he'll do it. I say I don't want Full Serve and he says it's all like that. I'm thinking, damn this State is backward ass!!

One day I pulled up to the gas station, got out, and started to pump my own gas thinking I was still back in Montana. I get done and I try to pay with my debit card and there's funny instructions. The guy comes out and finishes it for me. I just thought to myself, "WTF did I just do?" My friend just laughed and we drove off. So the moral of the story is: there is no point to this story. 😛
