I am building a new machine and if I purchase an OEM copy of Vista, and then make significant changes/ upgrades to the machine down the road, can I still use the same OEM version? What if I replace the hard drive or the entire computer?

Basically, what stops people from being able to install an OEM windows version on multiple machines or from taking it with them between machines?

Basically it is the EULA. You didn't pay for the privilege or the right to do so. To do what you suggest is piracy.

It won't authenticate.

I am attempting to be strategic. When you install an OEM version, will it not allow any hardware changes/upgrades whatsoever?

I think that generally, a motherboard change is going to trigger reactivation. Anything else probably not, unless you change every single component sans motherboard at the same time, perhaps.

Microsoft considers a new MOTHERBOARD as a different PC, so its OEM licenses restrict migrating an OEM license to a new motherboard. Unless the motherboard is a "manufacturer-approved" replacement for a failed motherboard.

Any Activation issues over other changes (hard drives, memory, etc.) should be supported by MS.

Users report that MS typically seems to be mostly concerned whether the OEM OS Key is loaded on more than a single PC, so you may find you can migrate the license to a new motherboard, anyway.

No, it's not piracy. It's a EULA violation. Not the same thing.
