I am using Vista 64 Ultimate on a Intel based system and I am building a new AMD based system with the same OS. What is the best way to get ALL my info, programs etc onto the new system?

If I do a full PC backup to an external HD in Vista on the old computer and try to restore it on the new computer will it work? How will it affect all the new mobo drivers etc?

Should I just install everything fresh on the new computer and move all the files, photos, settings seperately?

I'm looking for the easiest way so I don't have to have 2 computers sitting on the desk half apart trying to move files back and forth.

Thanks.

Joe

I would recommend this. The new mobo will probably not like dealing with an older install...in fact, I don't think that would actually work.

Always fun starting with a clean slate though. Just make sure you have everything backed up you can't replace.

Clean installation then use Windows easy transfer, part of the OS.

Just install Vista 64, link up the two with the network cable and do the transfer?

Will this keep all of my programs intact or will I have to reinstall programs? Is the transfer wizard only good for files and settings?

If I did a full PC backup in Vista can I pick and choose what I want to restore?

Yes you can do it this way or USB Thumb drive....

No, your programs will need to be reinstalled.

Fresh install, and pull everything from an external hard drive.
