My father-in-law wants to give me thier 3 year old stainless Maytag wide-by-side like this .

I'm pretty sure it will fit in back of my Caravan if I take both seats out, but he thought he remembered you're not allowed to lay it on its side. I can't find any info on that. Any one ever hear that before?

IMO he's nuts. The coolant is a closed system, shouldn't matter if it's upside down....

I've heard you can't do it at all, and I've heard you have to let it sit upright for 24 hours before plugging it in. I played it safe and rented a truck.

oil is circulated with the refrigerant. as long as you give the bulk of it time to settle back in the compressor's sump, i don't see the problem with this.

Yep, awesome! Thanks guys. The oil didn't occur to me, and that's the whole issue.
Thanks a lot. I think with the tips and precautions I can move it in my caravan and save myself the truck rental.

For scouzer, it's free. Hell if I end up having issues he won't care if I craigslist it. I currently have the cheapest Maytag they had in bestbuy from 2003 so I will enjoy playing with this, even if I get rid of it eventually.

:)

You are getting a free, late model, side by side stainless steel refrigerator, yet you are too cheap to rent a truck to properly move it and ensure its proper performance.

Time to sit down and re-think your life.

I like to think through problems and not assume any answers. If you tell me something can't be done I want to know why. In this case determining why saves me unnecessary expenditure as well as time and hassle.

The problem is that I think about my life (and everything in it) a little too much. If I had assumed it could not be done based on my FIL I would have hired the truck, if I were him I would have probably hired someone to do it for me. I prefer to do things for myself.

Ok you have older and far cheaper model now. You are being givin a nicer and newer fridge. you don't wan to spend the waht $40 to get a truck to move it?

seems renting a truck is cheaper then buying a new fridge in a few years

I'm with the folks telling you to rent a truck. It's a nice fridge and it's free. Take out the insurance policy of renting a truck to move it.

The issue is the grease that's using in the gearing for the ice maker.

You are just supposed to let it sit upright after moving it for a specific amount of times as a minimum. If I recall it's 24 hours.

Call an appliance place and ask, it's a common thing.

I have one and love it.

Wait, when did side by side models become crap? We just bought new appliances and the only reason we didnt go side-by-side is because my wife wanted matching GE Profile appliances, I wanted the Samsung model because of the reliability ratings, and the GE Profile french door model was made by Samsung (identical except for case, handles, and backlight colors).

In doing my research and also talking to the guys at the appliance store that definitely knew their shit, both are equally good. It's just a matter of preference, what fits the opening in your kitchen, etc. If I were buying counter depth, I definitely would've wanted side by side - the layout made a little more sense.

we have a side by side and i hate it.

Its not that its crap but i really hate the design. Next fridge we get i hope to get one that has the fridge on top with french doors and the freezer on the bottom.
