Movies That Never Should Have Been Dubbed...

Some movies can be watched when they are dubbed and it doesn't hurt the overall experience that much. True, you will always be missing out on something by not being able to hear it in its original language, but it's still decent.

Then there are some movies that are so Gawd-awful in their dubbed versions you want to do bodily harm to the people that authorized the butchery.

I offer the following selections for the list.

Lola Rennt (AKA: Run Lola Run)

I rented this on VHS, as it was not available for rent on DVD via the local rental store. It stated clearly on the box that it was a German language format video with English subtitles. Imagine my horror upon popping the tape into the VCR and discovering that not only was it dubbed, but the people they hired to do the voices had apparently been hired from a local company that made low budget porn films.

I have no idea if that is actually the case or not, but that is what immediately came to mind when I heard the voices used for the female and male lead characters. I wanted to rip out my eardrums with a fork before the movie was over. Great movie, though. Just make sure to get it in German.

Wasabi - The Japanese Dip That Kicks Like a Mule (AKA: Wasabi)

An action comedy from France, written by Luc Besson and starring Jean Reno. Fun movie, great action, good running jokes, horrid dubbing. For some reason PowerDVD had to be told repeatedly to run this en Français. It was fine once I got the configurations to stick, but the dubbing was not only bad, it was badly translated. Again, a fork to the eardrums would have been sweet nirvana compared to hearing the English dubbing on this DVD. Several jokes are missed even in the subtitled presentation.

Seeing Jean Reno play Dance, Dance Revolution was amusing though, as was the whole fight in the arcade.

Do you have any films that come immediately to mind when you think of bad dubbing and translation jobs?

I'm assuming you're not asking for animated movies, right? There's probably hundreds of those...

Let's just say that nearly every Americanized release of any anime sucks and leave it at that. 😛

OK, I suppose ONE wouldn't totally derail the thread. 😛
