Dr. Mann, the Martian. It seems like an Interstellar spin-off with both Jessica Chastain and Matt Damon in a NASA setting.

It's not though. It's a hard sci-fi man vs nature story. With a nice smattering of humor.

Assuming they follow the book.

Yeah. I kinda got that from the trailer. Just making an observation about the same actors in a similar-on-the-surface (NASA setting) film.

The trailer looks an awful lot like Prometheus. Then I realised who the producer was.

umm are you sure you watched the correct trailer?

Have you seen prometheus?

Look at the space suits, the way the landscape is depicted, the storm scenes, all very reminiscent of scenes in Prometheus.

I have seen Prometheus at least 10 times, there is no mistaking Ridley Scotts style in the new trailer. It is obvious.

I think you identified the wrong person as the failure of Prometheus, it was Damn Lindelof, same guy who wrote LOST. I have had issues with just about everything he produces, he's great at creating mysteries, or the beginning and and maybe the middle of shows. He's fucking terrible at complete stories.

The producer has done X-Men, Sherlock Holmes, and Elysium. All pretty solid movies.

I never said Prometheus was a failure. The photography was absolutely magnificent. I liked the movie but the plot was indeed awful thanks to Damn Linderlof.

I will be seeing this new movie, it looks awesome.

It's pretty easy to present a mystery that leaves the audience hungering for an answer. It's hard to then provide a satisfying answer to that mystery. Lindelof just does the easy part. It's amazing how quickly his work goes from decent to shit in your mind the moment you realize that he's always going to leave you hanging.

Writing a good mystery isn't easy either, and he does do a wonderful job of that. It's just a pointless talent if you can't finish your work.

Honestly though many writers struggle with endings. Stephen King is horrible at them.

That might work for the movies but I can tell you I've never had a workstation blow up on me.

However they did find an alligator recently in one of the ponds near the MCC, (mission control center). :hmm:

That's because you've never had one of those fancy NASA Mars Project workstations. Those suckers probably have to be cooled with liquid nitrogen or something ;)

Eh, a movie with Zoe from House of Cards? Nope, am going to avoid it. I dislike her that much.

Also, just because you're on Mars, doesn't make you a Martian. If I go to Africa and get stranded, I'm not suddenly an African.

Seriously you are complaining about that?

I have never seen a work of fiction so perfectly capture the out-of-nowhere shock of discovering that you've just bricked something important because you didn't pay enough attention to a loose wire.

Been listening to this:
Edited out link to audiobook. Though it appeared monetized by the copyright holder it was unauthorized.

I was going to post the same thing. The scenes in the trailer have Scott's fingerprints all over them. Hell, it looks like they re-used the space suits from Prometheus. Not that I mind, the movie looks interesting.

I'm fine if it looks like Prometheus. That movie looked awesome.

What would suck would be if the story was like Prometheus. Since the source material is awesome, the screenwriter is good (Cabin in the Woods, New Daredevil), and Damon Lindelof is off ruining some other movie the story will be infinitely better.

Also they just moved the date up from Thanksgiving to early October. Same weekend Gravity came out in 13.

They should at least have a gag reel for the credits or as an extra where Sean Bean dies in different ways -- heart attack, chokes on a bagel, wife comes to work and shoots him for adultery, console blows up, etc.

It's not a proper Sean Bean movie if he lives until the end :)

Looks good, will probably see it when it comes out! What kind of propulsion system do they use in the movie? A 4 year turnaround from the very beginning to go back and rescue Damon seems way to long, even for chemical rockets (though I know hardly anything about Mars-Earth orbits and where they best line up for missions).
