I'm not sure if this is the best area for this thread, but it might be the most applicable. Anyway...

In the past, I've always kept my movies in bookshelves, and by those, I mean the cheap, $25, 7-foot bookshelves you can buy at Target. They function well enough, but I feel like they waste a lot of space given most movie boxes have far less depth than your average book (excluding the mass market paperback releases). So, what do you guys use for storing your movies, and how do you like it?

I've looked at the smaller depth shelved styles that are meant for DVD/CD/Blu-ray, and I've also been quite keen about the rotating ones, but they are a bit more expensive. However, the rotating styles seem like they provide more storage for the volume that the storage unit requires.

My BD/DVDs are stored in boxes in the garage. The movies themselves are ripped to the media server that sits in the basement. It costs about the same as a good piece of furniture.

I do have a server that handles all of my media, but I still haven't ripped everything that I own. It would take quite a while to fill the gaps since I have somewhere around 500 movies.

It is a big time sink to rip them, but the good part is if you do it right you only do it once.

Hm, that is an interesting idea. I did recently have a bit of fun creating a work bench that I complained about in the Home and Garden sub-forum :p, but creating shelves sounds a bit easier.

That shelf unit can hold about 700dvds. I built them in 1999 and they are still around.
