Movie sequels that were better than the original

It's pretty rare these days for a sequel to surpass it's predecessor, especially now since it seems like any movie that does well or becomes popular usually gets a sequel that doesn't come close to the original. There are some 2nd-parters that I do think are either more watchable or simply better then the first, most of which are B-movies where it's not really that hard to be the best however. These are my candidates, pretty much off the top of my head:

Aliens > Alien
American Pie 2 > American Pie
Escape from L.A. > Escape from N.Y.
Die Hard With a Vengeance > ALL Die Hards
Kill Bill Vol. 2 > Kill Bill Vol. 1
Major League 2 > Major League
Short Circuit 2 > Short Circuit
Tremors 2: Aftershocks > Tremors
Under Siege 2: Dark Territory > Under Siege

Kill Bill Vol. 2 wasn't really a sequel, it was the second part of the same movie.

Empire Strikes Back > New Hope

If you consider it a sequel.

The only arguable one in that list is Aliens vs. Alien which I'd submit as incomparable since they are vastly different movies in style and content.

The rest....no. NO.

I knew someone would contest that, lol. You're right, but they were still 2 different movies to me and I thought the 2nd Vol. was a little more interesting and didn't need all the violence from the first to make it good.

Toy Story 2
Shrek 2
X-men 2 (1 was just so blah, 2 was highly entertaining! Nightcrawler's white house infiltration is one of the best openings)

Oh come on! Aliens was great with the marines, guns, and technology! Same with Tremors, the remote controlled car-bombs were great, not to mention it had so many funny moments throughout.

Alien was a suspense film. Aliens was an action film.

your under seige one I have to strongly disagree with. part 2 was lame as hell compared to part 1.

american pie is wrong as well, part 1 is the best in the series by far. die hard is also questionable.

and while all the bourne movies were good, I liked part 3 the best.

I don't compare 1 and 2 that way. I like both for what they are. Alien scares the shit out of you, Aliens you get to see some sweet action.

Alien is def better than Aliens

T2 is really the only one I've seen that I agree with.

Godfather is questionable, I much prefer the first one but part 2 is so damn good that it's too close to call. It'd be easier if they were just called one thing and Godfather 3 had never been made. Ever.

Major League was better.

The undoubted, undisputed sequel winner was Star Trek 2 > Star Trek 1.
