What, as movie downl...goers, would you all say defines a great movie? Well, not exactly that, but...more like, what would the best movie you've seen with a G-PG rating, versus a movie with a R rating? Was your favorite 'R' movie better than your favorite 'PG' movie?

Obviously, Star Wars has to be excluded because it beats everything, so...:D

I'd have to say 'R' for Terminator 2. A great story, good point(I suppose...), beautiful effects...especially for it's time, etc., etc., etc...

Yet, it was still quite gory...Star Wars was better, yet not gory! (OK, forget Star Wars...*repeates in head*)

Opinions?

I've always thought that a great movie can be made with no special effects, no gore, and no inapropriate material. Still...when some of this is added, it's hard for the other movies to match the amazment on screen.

Tough call, and interesting question. I'm hesitant to say there's a connection, because my likes and dislikes seem, as best i know, to be independent of rating.

I must say that I never ever look at those ratings.
What defines a good movie are two things, first, good story, second, good entertainment.

What I can say about Starwars, good special effects for its time, extremely horribly bad dialog, ok story.

Movies I consider good:
Snatch
Lock Stock and two smoking barrels
Ring
Brother
Battle Royale
LOTR

All of them have one in common, a solid story that keeps me interested.

Have you seen the new ones?

Special Effects 'for it's time' is hardly an issue anymore...it's another movie, with, of course, great effects, but that's normal nowdays. It depended on the story and other parts.

OK, 'it sucked then', right? :p :D

LordMaul,
hehe yeah I saw EP1, nice effects :) but its nothing amazing by todays standard, its just big by todays standard. If you want amazing by todays standards then watch the major battles in LOTR :D

Personally, a movie built around effects just doesn't do it for me (look at The Phantom Menace...could Jake Lloyd have been any WORSE of a child actor? Could Samuel L. Jackson deadpanned his lines ANY more?) Armageddon...great effects but a horrid plot and...well...Ben AFLAC!

I enjoy action flicks and sci-fi flicks but the ones I really remember are the ones that tell a great story and the actors just seem made for their roles.

Silence of the Lambs
Anna and the King
The Shawshank Redemption
Bridge On The River Kwai
Jaws
Duel
Psycho

But, there are times I toss the "critics'" views out the window and enjoy a fun film (most comedies it seems lately...esp. ones like Big Daddy or Deuce Bigalow).
