Virgin Suicides
Rated Universal in France (same rating as 101 Dalmations). USA: R. UK: 15.
Leon
France: 12. Israel: PG. USA: R. UK: 18.
Ali G Indahouse
France: U. USA: R. UK: 15
Se7en
France: 12. Israel: PG. USA: R. UK: 18.
Blade Runner
Israel: PG. France: 12. USA: R. UK: AA
The Godfather
Israel: PG. France: 12. USA: R. UK: 18
Etc etc.
Someone stop me if I'm wrong, but IMO it's a bit weird that these films, many with obviously adult themes in them, are classified so low.
If it was just one film, it may seem a little more "ok", but I don't think any kids should really be watching something like Se7en, or Ali G because of the nature of the content.
Just seems odd to me that they are so lenient in their ratings compared to places like the US and the UK. (An observation from a few film threads which ended up adding together to form a bit of a "WTF?" look on my face)

Well, when you get to see people getting blown up by a suicide bomber on your trip to work every so often, The Godfather is rather mild for your children.

Maybe its because they treat there kids more like adults and that they think kids can reason and such, unlike some other nanny states that "have the save the children from real world".

I think over in some of these other countries, their young one can handle more adult themed movies and not get screwed up by them.

I remember watching the movie TITUS and the in the directors commentary, she said they had to cut some footage out of the orgy scene so it could get an R rating in the US, while in Italy( who would have thought), the scene would have been fine.

It depends on the Culture, what they hold as their values/morals.

No, I think the US is messed with it's rating system.

If you are 16, you are considered old enough to own a gun (even a handgun in some states) but can't buy a ticket to see Leon???

Here in Canada there are very few R movies (which are 18a here). Almost anything you crazy americans call R we call PG-13. :)

Movie ratings are stupid. There should just be two ratings: "for the well parented" and "for the poorly parented".

They don?t care if some old chick trying to be young pops a nipple during a nationally televised game.

Hell during the SARS concert here in Toronto, CBC broadcasted boobies live and no one cared.

I don?t think France? ratings are fscked up.

ok, then 16 year olds then, or 15, or 14

My point still stands though.

yea the chance of being blown up at any moment probably makes films look silly. and france is weird. what the us needs is an R rating that excludes all small children though. and of course babies. ban the babies. could care less if they are being traumatized. they just annoy everyone around em is all.

That's common in many countries. However, it's not on during the day of course. Probably after 11 or so.

I don't remember ever seeing it in the 15 years I lived there, but what do I know... There're occasional boobies here and there, but not even the stuff you'd see on Cinemax....
