ok heres something i didnt understand:

in the movie gladiator, when maximus is planning to escape rome and go back to his troops in austria, the emperor guy sends some troops to kill him, and then it shows some evil senator guy slipping a snake into someones bed...

why is he doing that? and whos bed is it?
